I'm trying to wrangle a trip to a conference in San Antonio next month. Anyone have any ideas on where I might steal away for some rockhounding and what I might find?

George,
I figure I can get maybe 30-45 minutes out of town in any direction, presumably north or west. Maybe more, depending on when I get free time.

San Antonio is a rather large city, depending on where your conference is....and 30-40 minutes may or may not get you into the country side. once you do get out there, the landscape is fairly harsh with all the cactus and sage brush and mean old prickly plants. depending on long you are there, you should do some searches for the local clubs there and they might be able to help you.
otherwise, save you gas, walk around the River Walk and eat, shop and drink!!! they have a great IMAX theatre there too, not to mention "The Alamo". great city for things to do and see.
i found it a little difficult to drive around, it's a vastly different traffic layout to than what i am used to, but i got around ok and found my way back to the airport at the end of the stay.
good luck!

Well Matt, on this one I have to agree with KD. There maybe lots of good places aroung sananton but they are not open to the public. The closest that are open to the public are closer to corpus christy (there are three with pet wood, palm wood and agate). Enjoy the river walk, and take in a b-ball game.

Skip the traffic fight, Matt, and use the trolley system. It's awesome and runs all around and through the downtown section of San Antonio (River Walk, Alamo, etc.) Have fun! It's a really neat city to visit!

JUST NORTH OF S.A. IS BOERNE. LOOK FOR THE ALAMO ROCK SHOP, ITS ON THE RIGHT SERVICE ROAD WHEN YOU ARE NORTH BOUND.
AGATE, PET WOOD, OBSIDIAN, GEODES,ETC ETC.
NICE PEOPLE, GOOD PRICES.
