Does anyone know where the good spots are (if any) for Onyx around Mayer? I know there are some mines that are still operating but I was curious if there are any public spots to collect.

Hey Mike. I've been through Mayer a million times but never to collect onyx (panned for gold on Big Bug near there a couple times). There's directions in a book I have tho!
A ridge of onyx is 8 tenths of a mile west of the intersection of Central Ave and RT 69. 69 rises up and bisects it at a 90 degree angle at the top of the upgrade. On the north side of the road at the top of the grade is a locked gate at the quarry. This is where everyone went for years to collect, but now there's a now trespass sign on the gate. However when they widened the road a couple years ago it exposed more onyx and you should be able to find it on both sides of the road and along the drainage ditch.
There's another spot north of Mayer. From rt 69 in Mayer turn north on Copper Road opposite from where Central intersects the south side of rt 69. Copper road is a well maintained gravel road. Drive north for .7 mile, then turn left on a rough little road and go .2 mile to the top of the low ridge that parallels the west side of Copper rd. The onyx is at the north end of the ridge.
Hope that helps you out buddy!

November 13, 2015 This site was moved into the Closed to Collecting Section. I have recently learned that the "Black Bear Group" has filed a claim on both collecting sites.

Get in their and collect near the claim. It's nice material.

OK...rookie question... I've collected a bunch of spots, but never right on top of any claims. How do you know what's fair game and what's not? From what I can find online, they have 10 claims (Black Bear #1-10) last activity showing is payment 8/29/17 for the 2018 year. Total of 43 active lode claims on that PLSS section.

That's a good practice. The claim owner is required to mark the corners of the claim, although these posts (or rock piles) sometimes fall over or are vandalized. You can always visit the local BLM office and have them pull up the current claims in the area that you'll be visiting (sometimes, they may even have a map printout).

Thanks Any input in the concept that surface collections on a claim are allowed but digging is not?

Any input in the concept that surface collections on a claim are allowed but digging is not? You can pick up, but not take away, surface materials. That said, you could get some really riled-up claim owners doing something suspicious like that - used to shoot first on some claims.
