I was looking on e-bay this morning and saw a Fairburn listed with the description of 33 Fortifications. What exactly does that mean??? ;D Thanks. Steve

"fortification" refers to the layering you see with Fairburns, and for that matter- most agates (excepting the plumes, moss and a lot of the "Montana" type varieties).
In this case I imagine they counted them like rings on a tree- not sure how that translates into value, but I 'm pretty sure that is what they mean anyway.

Yup, refers to the sort of holly leaf pattern in banded agates where the rings have the angular ringed look of a medieval city's walled fortifications when viewed from the air as opposed to just concentric circles or ovals as in some of the Bots and Lakers. If I read 32 fortifications, I would assume 32 different patterns rather than rings..Mel

Mel,
I was under the impression that fortification agates were any agates with bands, bots and lakers included. So that is incorrect then? Fortification is the holly leaf pattern and bots, lakers, brazilians etc are just considered banded?

Shannon: Not necessarily. As I understand it, and many may disagree, while all fortification agates are banded agates, not all banded agates are fortification agates. Fortifications do occur in most all banded agates but Bots, Queenies, Lakers and Brazilians are often banded without the fortifications while Teepees, Fairburns, Dryheads, Lagunas etc etc tend towards the angular fortifications rather than the rounded or oval shaped concentric bands of the aforementioned types. Those angular castle -wall- like patterns have to be present for an individual agate to have fortifications. If you look in the ID section, Steve has posted pics of a beautiful Tee pee Canyon that shows about 7 nice fortifications..Mel

Curt LOL Mel.....I see what you mean. I got a box of Fairburns from Roger this year (one of my favorite materials!) and most do have the angular fortifications. Its one of those things that everyone has an answer for and you are never sure which is technically correct. Like when you start getting into Rhyolites and Jaspers. Shannon

Well, I'd sure call that a fortification. I've got some Ohio Flint with a fortification or two too. Reckon anything with chalcedony in it has some potential for a fortified design.....Mel

Thanks you guys for the definitions and explanations. I had to keep going back to my Teepee Canyon until I fully understood what exactly it meant. I see it it Curt's Chert too. Thanks Pete, Shannon and Mel. Steve
