I'm don't belong to the forum police squad and this will be my first and only thread about image width/size here.
I only have a 1280 pixel wide monitor and there are many people out there that still have 800 pixels wide monitors. Part of the page on this forum is taken up by stuff other than the actual post. I believe the forum software is set to 1024 pixels. Anything wider than that involves a scroll action by the user - you and me.
Image size is another problem most forum users contend with. Too large images are slow to download and take up a lot of server resources. Those users on dial-up will give up loading images over 250,000 bytes (250K). It takes forever to download.
All photo editing software has the ability to resize images. This resize is done in four basic ways - cropping, dpi reduction, picture width reduction, saving as a jpg at 80% reduction - in that order.
When you have an image to post to a forum, you should crop it to eliminate all the background that's not relevant to the object of the photo. Different software has different ways of doing this. All have some way of selecting the image size. Do a help search in your software on cropping images if you do not know how to do this.
Next is to reduce the dpi to web standards. MY camera takes pictures and saves them at 180 dpi (dot per inch) and while dpi is not the same as ppi (pixels per inch) which computer monitors use, it's close enough for what we do here. There is a place in your software to change the original dpi to one that is more web friendly - 96 dpi/ppi. Do a help search in your software for dpi if you don't know how to change this. If you have the choice of quality at this step, take the highest quality offered by your software.
Setting the pixel width to fit the screen. I use 600 pixels edited 5-16 - 800 pixels - the average monitor is a lot better quality now than they were in '08 as this will fit the posting section of most forums and monitors out there. This allows good definition of the image if it is cropped properly. Close-up/macro shots will be good. This should be on the same page as the dpi change. If not do a search on image width.
Saving/exporting your image as a jpg with an 80% reduction in quality will give a smaller image that still has good quality for web viewing. Most editing software will "save" an image in a form you can't use out of that software. You will probably have to "export" your image. When saving your image after doing ANY changes to the original, do it as a different name or in a different folder. Do not open and edit a jpg repeatedly - you will degrade the quality of an image if you do. Always keep your original the same as when it came out of your camera. You will always have it to fall back on if you need to change your copy.
Best of all, if these four things are followed, there will be no more scrolling to see pictures and text/pages will load faster.
Throw rocks if you will, but please make them agates.

Frustration! I am wanting to post pictures and I have a iMac and not a PC. Per posting suggestions I registered with Photobucket, followed the procedure as instructed but Photobucket nevers brings up the browse file buttons. Am I doing something wrong here or what? Any one can help?

Yeah they'll host your pictures IF you pay them to do it. I don't have much budge in my budget. Can't just upload here from the computer? Mike
