shotgunner: it will slow down after a couple of years but man, you are right, at first those turn at like twice the RPMs of a Lortone 12 pounder and are very rough. I use mine mainly for agate and jasper and it wears out grit fast too. Needs recharging often. Also get you some gear lube and lube the bearings at least once every day or two to avoid having your drive shaft wear out prematurely.....Mel

Were they designed with metal finishing in mind? Seems like a pulley change would make them better for rocks.

John, When I first got mine, I asked the seller about that and he said it was designed for rocks too but I think with all that speed, you're correct in that is was designed for deburring metal etc. I initially had a bearing issue and he sent me replacements for the destroyed shaft and bearings. Since then, over three years of 24/7 running with no problem except the motor has slowed down a bit reducing the rpms and I cannot load it with as much rock as I could initially. Did have one really odd thing happen during a big lightning storm the other day. Bolt of lightning cut the power and when the tumbler restarted, the drive shaft was turning backwards and threw the barrels off. Unplugged it and plugged it back in and it ran correctly again. Don't know what the heck was up with that but it's running fine ever since *L*......Mel

The MJR is a rock eater.I have in the past used 1 coarse charge and let run 2 weeks, and the rocks went to 1000 prepolish in the Lot-o.As Mel said, the bearings need to be lubricated. When I ordered bearings, the guy told me to use lithium spray grease on them daily. Now I use it on all my tumblers. The action does seem to be violent, but I have not had any chipping or breakage problem.I just think the loudness of the pvc makes it seem that way. After I do my next load,I plan on using spray on plastidip on the inside of the barrel and see if that helps the noise issue any.I have already sprayed the inside bottom when I repaired the bottom that had worn a hole in it.It is staying on the pvc,not peeling or wearing off.I had to repair the neck of my barrel today,it had worn down where it joined the main body and was leaking water.Ready to roll tomorrow. You can see the black line on the inside of the neck where it was separating.Used spray plastidip with multiple layers of fiberglass mesh. snuffy

I am using plastidip in my day job as a mask for grit blast. It seems to me it will not stick to the PVC. The solvent is gasoline and I do not believe gasoline attacks pvc. If I am right, then the plasti-dip will not stick very well at all.
I am spraying lithium grease often. Sure makes a big mess.
Please tell us your results.

In fact it barely made six months. Now the belt is broken. ;(

I use pvc barrels and find them noisy.Other than that i like them if they are schedule 40 pipe. Thin wall pvc will not last.I bought these on EBAY but they were not MJR.They are thin wall SDR 35 pvc pipe. This is what 2 months of my agate, speed and coarse grit did to them.My schedule 40 barrels will last for years.I made them myself and are much more expensive than SDR 35 barrels. So do not buy thin wall pvc barrels for harsh duty. re: MJR I have contacted them thru two different methods; ebay and email. Nothing.
I'll give it a few more days, but very soon I am going to be frustrated. I have a broken tumbler and they claim a 2 year warranty. I did not get 8 months.
