My 12yr old son has had some interest in rocks and tumbling for a couple years now so I thought designing and building a tumbler would be good for him. The design we came up with shows a 2nd set of rollers for adding more barrels but we will add that when we can get some extra barrels. This all started with a free dayton 1/3 HP 1725 RPM motor and snowballed from there. If you have any questions or comments feel free. Attachments:

My compliments on both the idea and the completion of it.

Just a thought but, don't you need to adjust the speed for one barrel vs say four? Maybe that size of a motor wouldn't notice the extra weight....
Very cool idea! Kudos for taking an interest in your son's hobby and supporting him with such a cool contraption!

Speed would not change with multiple same size barrels. 1/3 hp turns all the HP (now DP) tumblers from 12 lb through 65 lb.

Yeah, I was assuming that with that size motor and the pulley RPM reduction that there would be enough torque to not affect the barrel speed. right now motor turns 1725 RPM and the barrel is right at 40 RPM.

I like it. Good wood working skills. Something to be proud of. This one will be going when our store bought ones are wore out. James

Taking thread necromancy to a whole new level! Not at all. I have resurrected some of John Sands first posts. Too much good stuff gets lost in the deluge of new posts.
