Ok - The other day I finished one from a Deming New Mexico Thunderegg and it turned out nice, however the one I finished this afternoon I think is a dandy - It's obsidian but from a collection I bought. It's not a rainbow or a sheen obsidian... Just a interesting banded piece. The flash on the camera really brought the color and pattern out in this stone, however under normal house lights or sunlight it shows, however it's dark. There was a few tiny blemishes in the glass itself, however it polished like a mirror. Both of the spheres are headed to Texas for my buddies birthday - little surprise his wife asked me to do for him. Enjoy! Jason

Very Nice! I had no idea obsidian could have that sort of color and banding.

Thanks much! - I agree that was the first thing I thought was it looked like some sort of planet. I actually started making another sphere some time ago but trashed it as I ran into two fractures. It was a silver-ish piece and it had wild banding in it. I'm bummed it didn't make it, but that's the way it goes.
This specific sphere pictured - by the time I cut the blank, ground it and polished it I had right at 20 hours into the thing. The size is right at 4" diameter as well - so a fair sized ball
I'd still like to know what type of glass it is - I know my obsidians, but this one is odd - It reminds me of Burns green, however it still have a "look" to it which isn't correct.

Those came out really nice. Looks like some of the planets seen in the original Star Trek show.

It does have that world like appearance to it. First thing I thought when I started to grind it. Not sometime in the future we should see more goodies - All the scraps I had from cutting this sphere was mailed out this morning to Krystee - aka tntmom.... It's up to her to make some other shapes besides round balls LOL.

wow !!!! the stripes are stunning. How long does it take to make a sphere and what pre-forming do you have to do prior to putting it on a sphere machine ? thanks Steve

Hey Steve,
This specific sphere between cutting the preform, and grinding/polishing I have about 20 hours into it. I'm old school when I make spheres, I still take a rough rock, cut a cube, use a jig then cut the corners I make 26 cuts on my preforms. You can place this directly into the machine, but it takes forever to grind and tears heck out of the machine. So I use a 4" grinder with a diamond speed cup and hand grind all the high spots until I get a spherical shape. Then into the machine with 60/90 then 200, then 600 and polish with super cerium.
One of these days I plan to load a page onto my website with details on sphere making. However trying to find extra time has been a bit difficult.

Really, really, nice sphere. Guess I'm old school too. I also make the 26 cut preform.
