nycone, look up Kris Rowe and his Rockhound Field Trip Fanatics Group. I believe they're on Facebook and also maybe have a Ning site. He does regular trips out there and is a friendly and willing guide.

I went out there a few times when the site was newly announced and never found a single thing that became a polished lapidary item cabbed, tumbled, or otherwise. There is lots of typical California "dirty" jasper with quartz - some with poorly defined "poppies." There is also a somewhat colorful but otherwise plain granite type material called Blue G - I found some early on but never liked it much. Still, it's an easily accessible area close to my house so I'll probably go back there eventually just because. Hi, geoenthusiasts! The collecting just keeps getting better at Area 54, a former canal district gravel pit in the bed of Little Panoche Creek. This 1.5 x .5 mile site in western Fresno County, CA, is just a few miles off of I-5, and within a few hours drive of the Bay Area and Southern California. Now, with the release of Google Maps Engine, we have a new site map for Area 54. It includes a growing store of details, accessible by clicking the colored pins, badges and lines. Here's the link: mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zCdmE5btVtxA.kX9I6tpQQWoYRecent field trips have included the Northern California Field Trip Co-op, and members of the Roseville Rock Rollers, Mariposa, Tule, Lemoore, Santa Lucia Rockhounds and many other Societies. We've entertained guest rockhounds from as far away as Europe, Japan and China. This is the place for Blue G, and an endless variety of subduction metamorphosed stones. Bring plenty of buckets when you come to Area 54!If you're coming through Central California on I-5 and want an satisfying rockhounding experience, visit Area 54! Feel free to contact me if you want a guide, I relish any excuse to get out there and mine during the temperate months. Jasper & chert are among the colorful lapidary materials at Area 54Also feel free to check the Events Page at www.rockhound-field-trips.ning.com for information on planned field trips to Area 54 and other destinations. Eye popping poppy jasper is one of the Area 54 stars! We hope to see you out at Area 54, soon!Kris & Al

Ahhh I'm so glad I found this thread through Google! I tried using the satellite map and could not figure out how to get directions. (also so excited that I found this forum)
Went there last weekend to check it out. Plenty of good small finds without much digging. Will have to be back soon with more buckets and a buddy

Hello I just handed to stubble upon Mhm this forum while locking online for places in fresno county to go crystal rock hunting cuz ebay and ok online is too expensive and finding a trick is so much more worth to me than buying one. And I'm not too far from the place maybe an hour or so.. would be cool to not go alone tho, but I'll try and go in my small car lol and see what I can find soon.
