Well this past weekend I was able to go back with my buddy Nate, this time his girlfriend Ros came along and we had a really great time.
On the drive up we saw a biplane cropdusting
camp set up, rain finally stopped
stormy sunset over the prairie
Getting up after a good night's sleep
Nate's Fairburn and Prairie Agates
This is what Nate saw when he walked up on his nicest Fairburn
Nate's little lace/water/prairie agate in situ
Interesting Jasper I found
the end off of what was probably a decent fortification agate
a small, nicely banded chip of a prairie agate
My prize from the trip
lots of flowers
lots of bird nests
I was startled by a bird that flushed then ran away acting hurt. I looked at where she came from and found a nest with egg shells
two small, well hidden chicks walked away from the nest in total silence, look in the center of this pic to see one of them
I walked up on a pretty painted turtle
another giant spider. Nate found one that was as big as a mouse but it ran away before he could get a pic. He did shoot a pic of this one, notice all the babies covering her abdomen
We hiked to the top of some hills and I got a quick pic of Nate and Ros.
That's me on the right!
After I got home I took a couple more pics of some of the other finds. Everyone is so keen on Fairburns up there they seem to overlook some fantastic rock. Of course there is SO MUCH incredible stuff up there it's easy to find some really nice material.
Some of the "blue" agate. This is the Nebraska State Gemstone in one of its forms. There is a variety locally with nice pinks and purples.
Some banded chert I plan on breaking up to tumble. The colors are really nice, more pastel than the image indicates
Dolomite Crystals
Fossil Clams
Super sweet opalized/agatized pet wood, I didn't take enough pics of it, there is some banding in an agate layer on the other side.
Ok, here was the bonus. Before and after the trip we stopped by a more seasoned rock hounds' house because he was selling a lot of his collection. I zeroed in on some Condor and some Mexican material he had. Ignore the prices, I got a bulk deal, but thought I'd share, even though it wasn't part of our hunt, I came home with some great stuff
Long post, I know, but thanks for reading!
