Another "blind" venture of mine was getting into repousse/chasing copper,,,,
I saw a piece of copper jewelery on the web that said it was "Repousse and Chasing"!
Not knowing what in the world either repousse or chasing was I searched it and watched a couple of Youtube videos on it.
Oh yeah,,,,I gotta try this! LOL
Being retired is great but the pay stinks so after researching the many, many opinions on which pitch is the best for a given situation I decided to start out trying to do this using a few pieces of leather instead of buying pitch. This did not work out well so I bit the bullet and ordered some German red pitch.
No way was I gunna pay for a pitch bowl so I went on a scavenger hunt up stairs while the Mrs was at work! LOL I do this a LOT! LOL
As I searched in the black voids deep in the back of a kitchen cabinet I came across an old 10" cast iron frying pan!"Hmmmm,,wonder if she'll miss this?" LOL What the heck,,,go for it Tom!
I took the pan down here and sawed off the handle,,cleaned the pan very good,,,filled it with pitch and threw it into the oven of an old kitchen stove down here!Well,,,the pitch did melt but everything was pretty hot so by the time I tried to put the copper sheet into the pitch it was too late so,,,,another scavenger hunt was in order! LOLThis time it was her hair drier! LOL I figured I'd just better borrow this one cuz I KNOW I'll get caught with it! LOL
It took forever to get the pitch just right(whatever that was) cuz I was as green to this as I am with EVERYTHING else I get myself into! LOL,,,Dive in head first head again Tom! LOL
I needed some repousse and chasing tools so I started grinding.filing, sanding and polishing away until I had enough to get me into trouble.I soon found out that you NEVER have the right tool nor will you EVER have what you need for any given situation so you HAVE to make the tools to fit the job at hand!Prick punches, screw drivers, chisels, etc,,,anything hard will do to make the tools.
After a LOT ,,,and I mean a L O T of pounding away and ruining copper I finally made a Red Sox logo about 6" in diameter,,,,sorry for the blury photo,,,
I eded up making 3 of these as most of the family are Red Sox fans but,,,,out youngest daughter likes the "enemy",,the Yankees so I HAD to make one for her and her family,,,
We have a Golden Retriever named Ranger so I made this one,,,
Our oldest g'son(Joe)'s Head Baseball Coach (Jason Rathbon) at Herkimer County Community College,NY helped Joe sooooooo much to not only play the game but kept an eye on him with his studies and exposed Joe to a LOT of other college coaches/scouts and also Major League scouts.Jason was VERY friendly and open to Joe and our entire family and was very instrumental in getting Joe a Baseball Scholarship to St.Johns University,Queens,NY.
I HAD to do something as a Thank You for Jason so I made him this plaque from Joe and our family,,,
Just another "avenue" into the great world of metal art!
