rockpowell , Rick, and I visited the "parking lot" this morning. The road has seriously deteriorated. The site is so picked over that it will probably be our last trip. Crop 1 of the above photo Crop 2 I had to walk 30 feet from the car before I finally was able to fill my first bag. Having vacuumed up the last few available chips, this is all that was left. What we took is pretty much junk.

Man, what a waste of time and gas money for some cr@p rock. Good thing you didn't trip over it, or twist an ankle or something stepping around it all. Or hurt your back carrying heavy buckets a long ways back to the vehicle. Yeah, looks like a bunch of junk to me (wink, wink!)...
Seriously, though was the road condition bad getting in there?
Looks like y'all found yerself a few keepers. Some nice looking material, Dave.

If only I could find junk half that good here. Great stuff, the colors on those slabs are fantastic.

Life's tough all over, never enough time for the hike before dark, only junk to be found. Nice looking slabs.

We had to drive on the scary high bank past several places where the "road" was somewhere down below.

Seriously, the road is not maintained, very steep, nearly washed out and down the mountain side in many places. We had to drive on the scary high bank past several places where the "road" was somewhere down below. There's a road like that out at Indian Pass, where the dumortierite and palm bog comes from. It's actually farther to the east than you need to go, it heads downhill to the Colorado River. It was cut a long time ago, and hasn't had a stitch of maintenance since then. A real white-knuckle trip when you're the passenger!
There's a nice campground there, and a maintained road that comes up from Winterhaven. We've actually gone down the hill from Indian Pass, decided we didn't want to try going back up, and so went the long way around (Picacho south to Winterhaven, 8 west to Ogilby Road, and back north to Indian Pass Road). Safer, but about a two hour drive to get back to starting point.

Junk ?? looks fine too this easterner. one man's junk is anoth...... That was a little "tongue in cheek." This material is Welded Ash Flow Tuff. Heavily mineralized and agatized. My part of the haul. rockpowell was more selective and got killer material. As this molten mass tumbled and rolled along at over 700 oC and several hundred miles per hour it seems to have balled up - from an inch to a foot or more diameter balls with white on the outside, green (chlorite?) then dark material with the reds and yellows in the middle. Fun stuff. Never know what you will see next.

Sounds like a violent creation. Glad to know you scored well. i thought it looked like fie stuff. Too much red stuff peppering the ground to not score something fine.

Gorgeous stuff! Enjoyed the trip report. I have been trying to find out where that pipeline canyon location is. Can you send me some directions? I am up in Cache Valley, but I want to make my way down South again soon.
Also, rockpickerforever, where is this dumortierite location? I would love to find a location for some of that.
