Last weekend I drove to eastern Arizona (crazy I know) to collect beautiful petrified wood at the Dobell Ranch by Holbrook Az. They have a dinky hand painted sign on the new highway to the Petrified Forrest Natl Monument. Since it is private property you can collect to your heart's content. The going rate was $28 for a 5-gallon bucket full. I came home with 4 of them. Check out the size of the stumps next to my industrial strength dolly. There are a number of rock shops in Holbrook that will gladly charge you $9 for a piece of petrified wood the size of a deck of cards. This is one of those mom and pop places we rock hounds need to support. The Dobells have been living there since 1936. They have a neat little museum that chronicles the history of their homestead and of course they have many fine examples of minerals from the area. I started slabbing some of my findings and I will post them in the appropriate section. The haul Petrified Wood Petrified Wood

Will ya toss a couple of those stumps in a flat rater and ship them to me? My 12 inch saw hasn't been worked very hard lately.
Nice stuff, great price, hard to beat a deal like that. Jim

Barlclay, That's a lot of cabs, even acknowledging that fractures are common. Arizona wood is especially good therapy, and also beneficial for your creative development. You must be able to respond to the myriad of colors and patterns, and the equally diverse array of shapes that result when the piece you are working on decides to fracture in an unexpected plane. Word is that wood collected from buried sources, like you may have gotten into here is less prone to fracture than wood that has been exposed on the surface (freezing, heat, etc.) Much of it is so pretty that I just keep cutting those broken bits smaller until they are like match sticks and potential ear ring and necklace dangles. And of course every irregular little piece gets kept for tumbler ballast (Why use ceramics when I have all of these tiny pieces of PWood that exactly match what I'm tumbling in hardness. Good luck Barclay with the processing. Hey even with bad luck you will have enough to get some fabulous results. P.S. I'm still polishing some of the good stuff you send me in loan from California. Very cool! Is there still a fee site out there called Greer's Milky ranch? I think that was the name of the place we went years ago but maybe I'm not remembering it correctly. It was 50 cents per pound way back when so you got an excellent deal where you went. Not a lot of material prettier than AZ rainbow wood and looks like you got you a bunch of great stuff....Mel

The wife and I looked around Snowflake for property too, until I asked around about how cold it got in the winter. It's almost too cold for me here. I could not take that, and all that ugly white stuff too. Dang pretty country round those parts though....Mel

Looks like a place my wife and I would love to visit. Any idea what/how they set prices for the log sized pieces? My front yard could really use one.

I have been there twice. Both times Gordon put a lot of nice pieces in my car in addition to my buckets at no charge. My sister lives close to there. Gordon is a good man and will treat you right. I plan to go back again this coming summer. Winter is not the time to visit there.

Thank you for all the kind comments. This stuff is prone to fracturing, but that is why they make epoxy I have a couple of knife handles I am planning to make with my goodies from here. The folks at the Dobell ranch remind me of how things used to be in the good old days where people treated each other decently because that was just the way things were done. They were more than happy to share their extensive knowledge of rocks in the area, both on their ranch and elsewhere. I am going to see if I can arrange a field trip out there for my rock club. I scanned the flyer from the Dobell ranch and would be happy to email it to anyone who is interested.

Hi! I have a rare opportunity to visit Arizona and I want to go to the Dobell to collect some petrified wood. I'm glad to hear it is still open. Could you email me the flyer? I'm going in January so any help with directions, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! miatria@hotmail.com

Hello, It looks like you got some great wood! I would really appreciate a copy of the flyer from Dobell ranch. From some of the other information I have run across, it almost looked like the ranch was closed. I'm very happy to hear that it is still open! Thanks! (If you need it, the email is agatemn@cox.net)

Trying to get a crazy guy like me that's ruthless and fearless to make a thunder run down and come back with a ton of wood and want to entice him with pictures. Make that big ole cummings work for its diesel.

I'm happy to help as time allows but I'm afraid it's just a drop in a bucket. If there were some way to identify "hall of fame" posts like the "favorite petrified wood" thread I fixed a couple of days ago.
