Last weekend I drove to eastern Arizona (crazy I know) to collect beautiful petrified wood at the Dobell Ranch by Holbrook Az. They have a dinky hand painted sign on the new highway to the Petrified Forrest Natl Monument. Since it is private property you can collect to your heart's content. The going rate was $28 for a 5-gallon bucket full. I came home with 4 of them. Check out the size of the stumps next to my industrial strength dolly. There are a number of rock shops in Holbrook that will gladly charge you $9 for a piece of petrified wood the size of a deck of cards. This is one of those mom and pop places we rock hounds need to support. The Dobells have been living there since 1936. They have a neat little museum that chronicles the history of their homestead and of course they have many fine examples of minerals from the area. I started slabbing some of my findings and I will post them in the appropriate section. The haul Petrified Wood Petrified Wood Fixed... coloradocliff you know there are literally THOUSANDS of threads just like this one that are broken yes? I'm happy to help as time allows but I'm afraid it's just a drop in a bucket. If there were some way to identify "hall of fame" posts like the "favorite petrified wood" thread I fixed a couple of days ago. I understand Tommy and felt that this one would be particularly usefull to the members. Thank you and I do owe you...Cliff

It was worth it to me, if that counts. Loved seeing the pet wood and reading about the ranch. Hoping many other newer members read it as well.
Thank you Tommy and CLiff and others for all your hard work on bringing back the photos on so many threads.

Your resurrecting an old thread had me suckered in and preparing to be mad that Barclay had come that far east without tell me and and coming further east to hit some New Mexico sites. The AZ wood is great stuff whether you are collecting it yourself (by the bucket), or buying it from some of the local rock shops at $3 per pound. I too stray away from the $5000 coffee table polished stumps, but I do like to touch and scope them. Arizona wood is like junk bonds. Most of it is attractive of the surface, but of dubious value when it fractures; and yes some of them are homeruns that are irreplaceable.

Yeah Been working on some threads on the Big Bend Ranches and the places that members could make a quick and productive stop going home from Texas. The ranch is perfect for that. When was the last time you were at Dobell ?? Changes or anything you could add to whet members interest? Thank you ! Sorry its so darn hot at your house these days.

Nice video. We went to Dobell's in March and worked with Noah. We were put onto some very colorful stuff and came away with about 2 five-gallon buckets. I probably should have done a trip report but didn't. Two things about our trip -we ended up in a fresh excavation and were digging in volcanic ash, so boots and a change of clothes is a must...maybe even dust respirators. We had success cleaning with extra strength vinegar (after removing the mud) which isn't nearly as nasty as using muriatic acid. Thanks for sharing.

That was probably the best first post ever! Great video, I really enjoyed it. I subscribed to your channel and will check out some of the other videos.
Warm welcome from Virginia!

I really enjoyed your video and I will go look at some of your others. Great job! In fact, I hope to visit Dobell Ranch some time in October myself. Thanks to your video, I'm anxious to go.

I recently visited the DoBell Ranch (with Rhonda DoBell) and had a wonderful experience. Here is a short field report video about my experience collecting petrified wood: OK, you sucked me in with your polished video as your first post. I would agree with you that is is a great place to go to. However, I've got some concerns. This is your first post which leads to a vid on a YouTube channel that has 1.2K subscribers. Is your stuff on YT monetized, and do we present ourselves as your single biggest audience on the 'net right now? You've gotten much feedback on your vid, and you've been conspicuously absent since you first posted it. If you are going to be a continuing contributor to this site, then all is good. However, with what I've seen thus far, I am seeing your vid as being nothing than a targeted bit of spam. Prove me wrong. If I am wrong, I'll apologize. I personally think you put out a great product, so I'd hope you would continue to be a contributing member to this site. If not, your stuff won't last too long here.

I'm sure if he's that avid of a rockhound RTH has come up in a few searches. I'm sure he probably would like to have traffic for his videos, he made them for people to see, but he hasn't monetized or when you view them on youtube there would be ads. Since the wood expedition was connected to a business trip, looks like his first time this far west for a video anyway, he must have a day job. Rockhounding, video editing, and a day job? He may be busier than I ever want to be, so he may not be as prolific a poster as some of us. I say give him the benefit of the doubt. Welcome rockhoundingusa if you do another western trip be sure to let us know, there are several on here who can help with great locations.

Four-year-old thread and the new guy’s “conspicuously absent” after one day, eh?
Cool, new RTH pickin’ up right where the old one left off.

aDave, To post his video in THIS THREAD shows he took time to research this site before posting, not jam it in the Shout Box as so many spammers do. I've looked at most of his videos and for me he is pushing the locations, rocks, and owners far more than himself. I hope he comes back and shares more.

Good video but there is no way I could go there and only get the small pieces he did. Every rockhounder needs a pressure washer! If I had to go to a car wash every time I needed one I would be on the road all the time.
