Trying out Platinol (oxidising solution) for the first time. Malachite cabochon bezel set in 3-ply rope twisted Sterling Silver setting This is the outcome after a mistake: I was supposed to be setting another stone altogether. After completing the setting I realised I'd not reshaped the bezel after sanding the join to the backplate. It no longer fit, being slightly the wrong shape. I bought a cab of the required size and the fit was close. I just had to flare the bezel slightly; being malachite, I could have easily re-cut the shape, but it was so close that it could be persuaded in.

I've done that once or twice. Needs must when the devil drives.

Yeah I fit it the once and all was good, then just refreshed the edge on a whetstone & soldered. Wouldn't you know it - it no longer fitted.

There are so many steps involved in making something like this I'm not surprised we forget one occasionally. What bothers me more is when the setting ends up being too big.
