Tela rockjunquie and I have been bandying about names that get used to call rocks., especially when one does not know what they are!
It all started the other day when the word idontknowite was used. Since then, we have added to the list-
Unobtainium Urguessium
Leaverite
Fascinatium
Scintillatium
Glitterite
Wanna play? Please post any that you have heard, or have made up yourself! Thank you! Jean
ETA - I just went to mindat, to look at some of the names that are the actual names of rocks/minerals. Some of them are pretty far off the wall! What's in a name? Seems a lot are based on location found, others may be named after someone.

Tinkite- a material identified by the descriptive sound it makes when the cabochon splits in two during the final polishing.

wastite- for those cabs that had potential, but were just a waste of time.

I really like both of those! Tink is exactly the sound it makes! Although I usually utter a few expletives when that cab either breaks apart in my fingers, or goes flying across the patio and breaks. Ouch! Here's another- You've all probably heard of shattuckite, right? How about the dreaded " harderthanshitite" This would be an apt name for the coral from jamesp . Do you agree, orrum ?

You don't want to know some of the names I've used for rocks. Especially those that squash fingers, stub toes or ruin saw blades.

I like the "harderthanshitite"!! I've been slooowly cutting some up and starting to dislike the pretty but real dense material! I made up "gardenite" for the stuff not worth cutting but is okay as garden rock.

Yes Jean I can shove a piece of Jamesp coral against my 100 grit silicone carbide grinding wheel and grey mud pours off as the hard as shyte coral rips my wheel up! That stuff is for tumbling! LOL

I recently called one of Mel's slabs "doodle stone" so I guess it could be doodlite if found in the south and yankeedoodleite if found in the north.
If you sell it for enough money the IRS finds out about it the name would be changed to taxite.
If you pick it up in a national park it would be slammerite. Jim

LOL Funny the coral and coastal chert is formed by minerals precipitating through limestone. Unlike agate formations in basalt and lava. Most of the silica comes from very porous and easy to dissolve fossil diatom skeletons. LOTS of silica thick as bedrock. Blame the diatoms for making such dissolvable silica skeletons. Diatomacious agate. Diatomacite. Diatomacisite Rockpickerite Telaite Orrumite Shotgunnite Ericite Jimite Melite Jamesite Donite Geezerite Patite Leave any one out Neuroticite ?

MY late Uncle called my rocks FLR's -- funny lookin' rocks. That's often as close to a real ID as I get.

Hey, you guys are all really good at this! Keep 'em coming! Of course we can't forget Leaverite And fornickite And when the stone is sold by a certain snake oil dealer as blue but it ain't I called it sheisterite Hmmm, Scott, I didn't forget leaverite. It is cunningly hidden in the very first thread (between Urguessium and Fascinatium). Sorry, I didn't alphabetize them. I still have the piece of blue sheisterite you gave to me! wampidytoo , doesn't doodleite have two "I"s in it? LOL. Stickituptite for all those rock Nazi park rangers that ticket you for collecting 'govt' property. Ah, James, that is one of my favorite rocks! Stickituptite and "wherethesundontsheinium." The two are often found together.
Neuroticite... Really, James? (I always thought it was Neuroticitium, lol.)
geezer , Sabre52 , Pat , jakesrocks, Erich, orrum , Jugglerguy and gemfeller , thanks for contributing. But I want to hear more!
