I've been picking up rocks for 45 years (I'm 48). The first thing I gave to my wife was a rock I found on the road. RTH is the only place that I know that understands this.

Good old RTH, I have met many lifelong friends here. Great place to be!

Some of the best friends that i have never met are (or were) in RTH. While Life, the Universe and Everything tend to take up time, I still try and keep in touch in here, though, I must admit, I look at a lot of the rock pages on Facebook as well.

Cause my wife don't like to talk about rocks, politics, guns or pretty much anything I like cause we've been married almost 50 years and she says she's heard it all too many times. The horses don't seem to have good conversational skills, my dog died, and the cockatoo, Hell, he just sits around and screams and throws junk around. It's good to have folks to chat with about common interests...Mel

I had two neighbors growing up that were rock hounds. They were my parent's age and the whole street became interested. For several years 4-5 families would go rent cabins on mineral rich Lake Hiawassee in the Georgia mountains. 10 adults and 20+ kids. Never stopped hunting rocks no matter where I went including business or pleasure trips. On 3 continents, 4 if including Texas . Never found many rock hounds along the way till I joined RTH. Been tripping with quit a few RTH'ers ever since. Thanks for the good times Keith, Mark, Jimi, Bob, Ann, Tina, John, Stan. And many more that I hope to do road trips with. Thanks to the RTH for the camaraderie and putting up w/me. Still can't tumble obsidian worth a damn. Rock on RTH.

Interesting thread Dave - thank you.
The easy answer is same easy answer as a lot of you have - friends. I genuinely enjoy the friends I've made here.
The more complex answer is I've been a forum-head from way back when the internet bulletin boards first started happening. I spent a lot of time in various forums in my prior life of a tropical fish hobby - worked my way into an admin position on one prominent board which turned into ownership of another. It all came crashing down all at once in 2007 for reasons I can't dig too deeply in and I sold the forum to a tropical fish hobby magazine where it's still in operation today - about that same time I broke down all of my fish tanks and sold everything off. When I crawled in here several years ago it was like I had a chance to press the reset button and get back to what had loved and appreciated about the forum experience in the first place.
I am also active on Facebook - I have my personal page, and a semi-serious sale page, and I've joined a number of rock groups and pages which I generally loathe. There's no personality and no accountability - the amount of outright FALSE information I see being spewed by newcomers and old timers alike is very appalling to me. I also seem to see a lot of these groups ran by the same group of names - almost like a clique who elevates themselves above everyone with a million rules to protect their own interests. It's all about making a dollar which is OK except at the cost of authenticity.
Anyway, it's very difficult to establish any real connections or friendships in that atmosphere - especially when I tend to be a bit of a troll with good intentions - and I've been banned from a number of pages LOL. I consider this forum my home. I've met more people face to face here than in the whole 12 years I spent on the fish hobby boards.

Because if it weren't for this site , I would still be dragging cool rocks home not having a clue what to do with them . It is the members here and their unselfishness and willingness to share information and experience . Seeing what others are doing with rocks makes me want to learn more and try harder to do my best . I'm not too old of a dog yet so I can learn a few new tricks .

Any chance we can get some pictures? I love a beautiful fish tank. So captivating, but I know I will never have one. Maybe start a thread under creations? I have a genuine interest.

Maybe start a thread under creations? I have a genuine interest. Absolutely I would love to do that. I took (and still have) thousands of photos over the years in the infancy of digital cameras (before I had a smart phone lol). Nothing fancy just point and shoot. The other thing is I focused primarily on raising cichlids - either South American or African - Lake Tanganyika to be specific. My point is these guys and their high pH water (8.0 - 9.0) were tough to have a fancy tank - you pretty much end up with a box of water with fish in it haha.

My step father in law kept tropical tanks. That was before I met him, though. But, I have heard about how difficult they are to keep. Beautiful, though. Did you have any black lights?

Did you have any black lights? Nothing organized - maybe the occasional "amaze the kids" usage is all haha.

She got some yellow and blue Acei cichlids(L. Malawi) to put in with plants. 4 yellow, 3 blue. 2.5-3.5". 20 gallons. No injuries from fights, for Africans quite peaceful. They are thriving and spend a lot of their time vertical head down picking algae off leaves rocks gravel. Never checked the ph, guessing it is 7-7.5, but plants and fish thriving. Acei best at >7.8 but these are some of the healthiest looking Africans we ever had. Never had such active feeders. The last half of the day every fish will be vertical bobbing up and down picking at algae. Amusing.

I found RTH by happenstance. A little over a year ago, I was searching stuff for rock tumblers because I wanted to get one but really had no idea what to do. So I did a search for rock tumbling forums and this popped up. I joined and started reading threads. Everyone was so helpful and continues to be so. Members are also so supportive and encouraging. You can tell that people really look forward to other people posting pictures of their creations, new information, or the trials and tribulations of some rock related event and the lessons learned. I keep coming back because I keep learning new stuff, I like looking at all the pictures, and because its a pretty active forum. A lot of forums are dead these days because of Facebook, twitter, etc.
I have Facebook but i really only use it to keep in touch with friends who have moved away, friends from college, etc. I don't belong to any rock groups but thats mainly because I don't like the setup of Facebook groups. They are hard to search for old information and things disappear within a matter of hours. I grew up participating in and moderating a few forums over the years. Forums are where I am comfortable and the people here make it even more comfortable.
