I saw videos of people doing this on Youtube, so I figured it was worth a try to see if I could too. This is the first run at it and I think it's worth another go. I have some coins collected from around the world, and some have intricate designs around the edges that could make interesting rings. I had $1.75 in losses before I hit the center of the coin.

I like the coin rings. Been wanting to try one myself but haven't yet. You did a nice job on yours.

Is it still illegal to deface us currency? Now how did you do that? I want to try if I have the tools!!! Not according to this guy. I watched some of his videos on making rings. I also watched some from Jason Works; there are a ton of them out there. It would be nice to have all the tools that they have, but I don't. A ring stretcher would make the job easier, for sure. I bought a punch set and steel dapping block from Harbor Freight. Using an arbor press, steel ball bearings are pressed on the hole in the coin in the dapping block to 'roll' the coin out. I used a rawhide hammer and a mandrel to shape the ring after rolling it in the block. It took a lot of annealing, filing, shaping and reshaping. Perhaps by luck, I hit the size I needed.
All the research I did beforehand suggested there is nothing illegal about making these rings, but do your own due diligence.
