I have had these nice big charoite beads for a long time and could never find gold filled caps big enough, so I got some sheet and planned to make some. Well, I was really hesitant to use the gold because I was afraid to mess up. I put it off for a couple months now. But, I got the nerve up today after someone gave me some gentle encouragement yesterday. Thanks, Garage Rocker . I did a few copper ones for practice and then it was a cinch. I know this isn't much, but it just goes to show, sometimes you just have to jump into it. These are just on a temporary wire for the pictures. They are going to be simple earrings and a pendant.

I have been there. Have never had the courage to even order gold metal for a project. I have had projects wait for months even years before I have had the courage to finally do them and afterwards I ask why was that so hard?
Your project looks beautiful. Can you even tell me what the hold up was?

Can you even tell me what the hold up was? Thanks. I don't know if that was rhetorical, but I have an answer anyway. I have a small work area, so part of the problem was I knew I had to tear everything out and put it back, so there was that bit of laziness. Plus, I haven't used the disc cutter and dapping block very often, so I didn't feel all that confident doing it with gold. Then there is the other side of laziness knowing that I had to make a bunch of copper ones (and dig out all of my copper to find the right gauge) to work out the size that I wanted. I haven't made end caps before and only rarely have ordered them as I don't usually work with beads. I guess it was a combination of a bit of laziness and treading in uncharted territory.

Sometimes we need a gentle nudge and sometimes a giant shove, but the dread is always worse than the action. Glad you jumped in, they are as perfect as I knew they would be.

Y'all rock! Thanks so much! I almost didn't post this because it doesn't seem like much. It's the gold that made it a challenge, not that it is harder to work, just harder to work WITH. Nerve wracking. LOL!

Did u solder the two little cups into beads?

The tools I use are pictured. You may be confused by the gold filled beads that separate the beads. First, I find and mark the jeweler's brass side, which looks an awful lot like gold, then I punch out the right size disc with the punch. I punch the brass side. Then I form the cup with the dapping block. I do this with the brass on the inside.

I assumed gold over silver. Should cost same as silver the brass way.

Gold over silver would be vermeil. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermeil Costs much more. Gold fill is a lifetime product with proper care. It isn't like electroplate or a coating. It is a layer of gold which is bonded to the base. I have a locket over 100 years old that still looks great.
