I am not one of those regular lottery players that forks out $20 or better each week. Funny that those who can least afford to do so make up the majority of those that play. But I digress...
Strange chain of events this week. Monday, I was on the road around lunch time, decided to stop in at my favorite French drive-thru restaurant, Jack dans la BoƮte, for a bite to eat. (Besides liking the food, I've got 400 shares of it, so go there when I can.) I ordered my food, then waited. And waited. And waited. Maybe only five minutes, but it seemed like an hour. When I get to the window (there had only been two cars in front of me), the guy checks my order, hands me my food, and then says, "It's on us today." Alrighty then!!!
So now I have a few extra bucks in my pocket that I figured was basically free money, do what I want with it. Took that $5, and bought $5 worth of scratchers, a $3 one and two $1 ones. Don't remember what the $3 game was, but the $1 ones were "I Love Hearts." Being this is February, I thought that was appropriate. Well, one of them was a winner, the prize being - another scratcher! It's been in my purse since Monday, so while I was out this morning, I stopped at a 7/11 store to get another ticket. The clerk was just going to give me $1, I asked if I could get another of the same scratcher.
Now, I thought about scratching it off while still there JUST IN CASE it was a winner, but I didn't want to assume anything. I drive home, it has three hearts lined up, yay! I scratch off the prize box, it says $20. Now we're talkin'! Next I scracth off the bonus box, it says 2X. So this ticket is worth $40. Yippee!
Now, my dilemma... Do I parlay it? Cash it out for $40 and parlay it, buying $40 more scratchers? $40 worth of regular lottery tickets? OR, spend it on more rocks and supplies? I have parlayed scratcher winnings up to about $80 before (also starting with just $5), before losing half of it, then stopping and pocketing the money. It's like a game of chicken, how long do you keep going??
What would you do? Spend it on rocks? Jean

For the lottery to make money, the odds are against you. They are even more against you if you keep spending any winnings until it's all gone. If you play enough, you will definitely lose. If it was me, I'd be thrilled with how much I'd won so far, and spend it on something else. Rocks seems like a better choice than more lottery tickets.

Spend it on rocks, of course. No, seriously, I would do that, because I am not a gambler. To me, you are a winner right now. Why gamble, lose it and become a loser?

Rocks and supplies and/or anything else YOU want. Not more tickets!
Enjoy!

I am not a gambler either, I'd tuck that money behind my Driver's License and keep it as emergency money.

Gosh, I'm leaning towards what Vic said, lol. I mean, if I pissed all of the money away, I'm no worse off than when I started, right? I'm from the Price Is Right generation, with Bob Barker. Come on Down!!! Now, do you want to keep what you already have from behind curtain #3, or trade it for the box that Carol is standing in front of? Trade it, trade it. Oops, you got zonked!!! Now what are you going to do with that donkey? Yes, Garage Rocker , I've heard that description before. How about, nothing ventured, nothing gained? Somebody's gonna win it? I know, I know, you're all probably right. Tell ya what. How about if I just put it in my wallet, behind my driver's license is a good place. Husband has outpatient surgery on Monday (upper Endoscopy, probably has a bleeding ulcer), just found out the co-pay for that little bit of fun is $600. I could be responsible and put that $40 towards that. Or I could parlay it, and win buco bucks and not have to worry about anything! No? Just kidding. I will do the fiscally intelligent thing. If I don't have to spend it on that, I can always parlay it later, lol. Thank you all for your input, the voices of reason. One says go for it, five say no more tickets. Jean

Buy a dollar ticket/donate a dollar to the lottery, but keep the penny.

Brian beefjello - I recently got a wheat back penny as change, too. I think it is a sign of the times. Too many people struggling to make ends meet, either dumping out the 5 gal water bottle, or breaking into the kid's piggy bank, rolling and spending them. Always a good idea to have a butt load of pennies on hand, the better to come across that infamous 1962 one, Randy Garage Rocker . LOL! Scott @shotgunner , I think you missed the part where I said my lunch was free, gratis of slow JBX workers. So I have no investment it in whatsoever. The $40 is ALL free money at this point! There is no basis. (FYI - Adult beverages are much less expensive at home. Just saying... )

For the time being, it is a $40 winning ticket in my wallet, lol. I think I have 90 days to redeem it for cash. Got my gameshows mixed up! Of course it was Monte Hall on Let's Make a Deal I was thinking of. Contestants dressing up in crazy costumes, choosing and trading prizes. How fun!

My sis has incredible luck but I am the king of the reverse parlay. Take a fifty dollar win and turn it into 12 dollars. Take the twelve and buy tickets that win three dollars and take the three and win zero. That's why I quit buying tickets *L*. Better to buy ammo and blow it down range or rocks to saw. Way more fun!.....Mel

rockpickerforever, quit gambling while you're ahead. Enjoy the $40. When Calif started the lottery back in the 80's, I bought one $1 ticket. Haven't bought one since. I got it out of my system. Now I can say I'm a gambler & a loser!

Thank you all for your insights. Geez, I feel like all y'all think I should be a charter member of Gamblers Anonymous, lol. Seriously, I do not have a gambling problem. I have been to two Indian (Native American) Gaming Centers three times total. There are probably at least another dozen others within an hour or less driving distance. Okay, okay, I confess. And I played nickel slots in Vegas eons ago with my yet to be inlaws while driving thru Vegas at 2 in the morning. Oh, and there was that time when there was a reptile show in Vegas that we sold at. Major dud, it was held on a Thanksgiving weekend! Scott, do you remember that?? So what else to do but play quarter slots? And of course, being so close to Del Mar, have played the ponies over the years.
But what is gambling? Is buying car/house/life/medical insurance a gamble? You can get the best policy you can buy for the money, yet the insurance companies job is to avoid paying out, a big game!
I spoke with Solomon, I think I may be able to make all of you happy.
Rob Jugglerguy , I will not buy more scratchers with the $40. Maybe Lotto tickets, and not with the full amount. Just kidding! May spend it on some tumbling grit.
Tela rockjunquie , if I only lose a part of it, am I still a loser? Pat , okay, no more tickets. But probably not rocks either. I'd rather find those than buy them.
KD krazydiamond - this will make you happy. I will cash out the ticket, and put the full amount behind my driver's license. For a rainy day. (Have been having a lot of those lately...)
Randy Garage Rocker , already addressed. But if it is all found money, it is really not costing me anything to gamble with it. Right? The math is easy, WIN WIN.
Vic zekesman - Still thinking on that one hard. Must...... resist...... the...... voices......
Brian beefjello - I guess you missed your opportunity. Next time, go for it!
Scott @shotgunner - I will put at least $5 in my wallet (no telling how long it is going to stay there, lol). There is no hurry to parlay it, can do it tomorrow, or wait a year. No, that won't work. It will have been spent by then - probably.
Mel Sabre52 - It's been a long while since I wasted some ammo. Don't really want to jump thru the hoops they've put up to buy it these days anyways.
Lynn zarguy Good for you! Gambling is a nasty habit, like smoking or drinking, and way more addictive than sex. Don't get started!
Should I "hear" numbers in a dream, of course I will have to play SuperLotto or MegaMillions. That's a given, right? But only if the prize money is way up there. Or, I could use my two favorite guys's birthdays for numbers. I can always use more money. Can't everybody? Jean

I'm not against the spending of the money at all. Never been called tight, but I prefer to receive a good or service for what I spend. The chance at something does nothing for me. It's more about the waste than the money being spent. Consider yourself ahead right now and be happy about it. If you wish to play out your 'hot streak', take $5 out of your winnings and parlay that. I don't think you have a gambling problem either, high roller, you have a penny hoarding problem. Just my two cents. Ha!
