Thanks for the trip report(s)! #15 is my favorite aDave That is mine too! This was one of the pieces that I was initially considering cutting/polishing, but I'm not so sure now. That was the last find of the day. Seriously. Dave

Great trip report, looks like fun. Thanks for sharing, you two. Rock hounding is a whole lot different around here.

There's a dry lake there?

Just South of the "Lavic" area is the Northern edge of the 29 Palms Marine Corp. bombing range. They often have a guard at the edge of the dry lake to keep people out. Usually sitting under a cammy net. They frown on collectors looking for unexploded ordnance. I was driving past Lacic on the freeway and had a bomber fly over of the lake. Wasn't as low as it appeared but I thought he was trying to land on my motor home. If you take the Hector off ramp and head towards Ludlow there is a RR crossing. At the crossing turn right at the tracks and follow a dirt road on South side of tracks. You will see the lake below you and come to a sandy little road to right. Follow it around and park. Lots of the brecciated jasper there. Don't continue down to the lake.

Actually three lakes, or maybe more. I think that one is Lavic Lake and its a great spot. As to Susan's location, with all due respect to jamesp and Captbob, let me quote Jon Lovitz...."Yeah, yeah, yeah...that's the ticket!" Craig

My buddy and I actually watched them bomb at the lake one time. Very impressive!
So much material at Lavic . I prefered to hunt the other side of the tracks but I was told there are some great areas north of the freeway too. Was gonna go explore there before my Texas move. Met a guy at the Mariposa show with a bin of huge Lavic chunks in the five to fifteen pound range he said came from the ravines north of the freeway but never had a chance to go check it out as I was just finding all I needed at my regular site.....Mel

Thanks metalsmith! I kind of wish I could have seen some bombers or something, but they never seem to be out on the weekend.

Can you imagine if they accidently dropped a big ole whopper on the Lavic area? What new treasures would be blasted out?
