I made this years ago and cannot remember what the stone is. Maybe Covelite? It isn't very blue and mostly purple with a chatoyanancy. If photobucket ever loads the video you could see it. Will post it if finishes.

Hard to see in the picture but could it be some type of labradorite? Does not look like any covelite I've ever seen.

Got it! Thanks. Doesn't look like my covelite, but it is a beautiful purple. Thanks!

No, not covellite. Looks almost like purple labradorite, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest maybe some super fine charoite. I say this because of that white bit in there. Charoite can be very chatoyant. I've seen more solid looking charoite like this, too. (versus the more chaotic stuff)
It's very pretty and a very nice piece- whatever it is.

What Tela said. Billy how hard was it? Have no idea, will pull the bezel back and see how it scratches. Made this when the only thing I knew was turquoise, now I know there is other stones besides blueish in color.

Pretty stone but I think charoite might be the answer.

Pretty stone but I think charoite might be the answer. Pulled the bezel back and scratched it with this knife.

that knife wouldn't scratch my leatherman and leatherman wouldn't scratch it. Good steel in the leatherman so I am guessing the stone is 5.5 to 6. I looked all over for my charoite but you see my mess....good luck. It wouldn't scratch a laker or crazylace, but it did scatch the lapis and a few other stones I knew were softer.

If the stone goes black, I'm thinking labradorite then. It's really soft, too. It's an atypical lab, though.

Charoite easy to scratch by knife. Labradorite being a fancy feldspar is typically a 6.5. But, at least you learned what it is. No doubt it's Labradorite!!

I would go along with charoite except for the black until tilted description. Color reminds me of sugelite - I know that chatoyant behavior does exist in sugelite but we're talking extremely rare on top of an already rare stone.
Edit: didn't see page 2 when I wrote this.

As a lab, it is still odd. Can't say as I have ever seen that white bit in a lab. I can see the white and those bits of black in a charoite, but I have never heard of one going black. If it goes pure silky black, I'm betting spectrolite (Finnish Lab). Purple is very rare, so one so big and flashy is a premium. Something about it, though, says to me that it is neither. Wish I could see it in the hand- I'm a sucker for purple stones.
