Adam bring them to Cali. I'll cut them for you. Tacos on you. Lengua pot favor. What city or town do you live in, again? It'd be nice to go out there to coastal California. And have KY agates cut and shared. And have tacos. Sounds awesome. I was thinking of a trip back to Niland. The girlfriend's mom and granny lives out in Niland, but the real reason I want to go to Niland is for the rocks. But to get to Niland I must use Greyhound, and a transit bus. Wish me luck on the agate hunt tomorrow. Not sure what to expect, but maybe the conditions will be favorable. Just rained all day yesterday. Not sure if the local guides would call off an agate hunt for high creek levels. But everyone paid for this hunt, so I doubt it. Chino CA is was more coastal than Niland. Great tacos a short walk from the pad.

Shoot, Roy, I met a guy named Ray today, lol, funny!
I went on the hunt! It was a doozy! I got sunburned, cuz, you know, I'm pretty pale.
So many people attended the two separate hunts, the easy terrain and rough terrain hunts. The whole lot of people seemed confused, but that's expected, they was all from different states!
I met El JeffA at the easy terrain hunt, quite a few other people. The guide gave me an escort to the agate hunting grounds way up in the styx, as I foolishly believed we wouldn't have to travel far to get the hunting grounds. There we hounded to hearts content, all of us from the many states abroad. Jesus, what a day. I met a geologist, as well. That was kewl.
I didn't really learn anything today, though, just that... everyone needs their own car, and damn good pair of shorts that won't rip on you.

You won't believe this. I tweaked my back changing shoes this morning. Should make for an interesting hunt.

How high was the water? Pretty high, most creeks branching off the Kentucky River were flooded heavily. Did I find any agates? Maybe I was one of the few who did find a full-fledged KY agate. It took some time, and sifting. Quite a few people were able to find agate bearing geodes, I got a few myself. The geodes produce quite outstanding agate, but the geodes are quite scarce. I was a little misguided, thinking there'd be a ton of geodes waiting to be picked. Nope. My county has an abundance of geodes, for sure, they litter the creek beds here... but not in Estill county. I wish those who join the hunt today and tomorrow the best of luck. And I hope ya'll make new friends and connections. This here is the cream of the crop from the agate hunt, found it all alone on a gravel bar. I'll need to get someone to saw a few geodes from the hunt to see if they've anything inside.

Better, adam, I think that's information they can use. You got a nice chunk of agate out of your hunt. Yes, Estill county is picked over way more than Rockcastle, but that's where you find the classic KY agate patterns. Not that there isn't any in Rockcastle, but for agate and not geodes, Estill is the place to be. Those creeks are scoured every day though, money to be made for those that don't do the 9 to 5.

Of course, not all agates collect at the bottom of a creek or under gravel, as one would believe that agate is more dense then most other minerals and rocks, therefore it would be logical to think they would collect at the lowest points of a creek. Luck has some factor in this, and location.
The heavier nodules might be buried, or might be exposed out of the banks of the creek, or they could have eroded completely out of the bank and washed onto a gravel bar. Or they could be exposed on dirt roads. Either way. Good hunting!

My wife and I were able to make it Irvine, KY for two agate hunts. Yesterday we met adam and today we were able to meet Toad . Very nice to meet you both. We had a great time and hope to make it back next year. Photos will follow...I can not figure out how to post a pic form my Flickr account on iPhone or iPad to this site. I will do so from my laptop when I get home. We rented a cabin on 250 acres in Estill County and pulled several 5 gallon buckets of rocks from their creeks. Unfortunately, the locals say it is not KY agate...but most is hamburger. You will understand after seeing photos... LOL. Beautiful stuff to me though! We also were invited to a locals collection (in Powell County) to purchase some agate prior to the hunts. I made sure I did not return empty handed. Could this be Garage Rocker s connection? Roland Mc?? All in all, we had a great time and met many great people. Yes, we found some promising pieces but we will not know for sure until we cut them. The part that matters most is we had a great time and met some wonderful folks that make us want to do it again next year! Kentucky's most valuable asset is not the renowned agate but the people here ready, willing and able to share it with everyone. Pics to follow

743 miles later, I'm back home. Grabbed some flint and a few pieces that have some agate in them. But I don't think I got any traditional Kentucky agate (except for the piece that Jeff donated). I'll try to post some pics in the next day or two. Right now my back hurts.
Great meeting you Jeff and Patty.

El JeffA, I'm glad you enjoyed your hunt. We may not be the most sophisticated around here, but we are hospitable. Does this place look familiar? You met a true KY legend in the rock world. I mean, he literally wrote the book. His stash has steadily dropped since I first started going there. I don't even buy that much KY agate any more, just what I want to give away. I about cleaned out the $5/lb. Lakers though. When you say you picked up hamburger, did it look much like this? I have plenty in all red also. Fun to pick up. They look impressive in amongst the usual creek fare anyway. A guy I know picked this up on his hunt down there. I think he was on the Wednesday easy hunt. There is some good stuff out there, it's just incredibly hard to find. That makes Roland's place even more impressive. Wish you could have seen it when he first opened up his collection to the public. Good to hear that everyone has enjoyed their time in our little corner. And the weather cooperated, which is no small feat this time of year.
