Doing something a little different - Today was a rare day off where I could just grab the dog and take off without having to worry about a thing. As a result the rockhounding was loose and light and not overly serious. I came home with less than a milk crate of rocks and half of those will probably end up in our garden. I thought it would be fun to video document most of my finds as they occurred. I tried to make it a little educational and informative for those who don't get the opportunities to roam these areas themselves. In case anyone is wondering the three areas I went to today are *VERY* well known and I'm not revealing anything that isn't widely known or able to be found in about 30 seconds on Google maps. The potential collecting area in the region is vast but the vast majority of it is on private property. 90% of Burris Creek is on private property and I would estimate that 98% of the south fork of Stoney Creek from the time it originates at the base of Snow Mountain until it empties for good into the Sacramento river, is off limits to collecting. Most of it is private property but also a substantial portion is on Forestry Service land or National Monument. The tiny sections that are available are hit hard and frequently by most northern CA rock clubs and yet they continue to produce year after year. Enjoy! Charley and I sure did. Sorry about the wind noise in some of the videos Edited: the following five videos were added 4/2. Edited: video added 4/2

What a great trip report, Thanks Tommy! Really fun so see what the area looks like and the range of rocks to find. Charley is a handsome doggo too, and quite helpful it looks like! Looking forward to seeing your cuts!

Thanks Susan! I wasn't sure how well a post like this would work out. Someone did something recently like this in the cabs section with mixed reviews I thought I would break it all into little chunks instead of one long video. I've also got a bunch of still photos that I will add to this as time allows.
When you're ready to come up there and hound let me know and Eva and I might be able to join you for the grand tour.

Yes, I think the small chunks was key. Also you embedded them rather than just having links. Would love to come up sometime, those are definitely different rocks than available here. Have any luck at the show?

Thanks, Tommy. That is a nice perspective, I felt like I was ALMOST there. Found some nice stuff, lets hope for few fractures.

Have any luck at the show? We never made it to the show Mainly we were having too much fun - but also, at our second location at Burris Creek I spotted a rock I absolutely had to take a closer look at ... in the middle of the stream. I couldn't risk slipping if I took my shoes off because of my surgically repaired ankle so for the next two hours I was wading in the water in my hiking shoes (and socks) lol. Of course I wasn't smart enough to bring a backup pair of shoes. That's what happens when Eva isn't here to help me prepare for a trip

LOVE IT! It was really cool to see the video presentation. Who doesn't love to see a dog playing in the water, either? Looks like you two had a great time and true to your thumb you picked up some cool rocks.

Fantastic trip, thanks for taking us along. I love your rock hound, too bad he's not a labradorite retriever, you could have kept your shoes dry.
Peace, Rich

Great trip & videos Tommy!!!! I'm must admit I'm jealous although I don't hate you as much as orrum. Only 4.2 million for the ranch, sounds like it's time for another RTH fundraiser....

Here's another update for you. I whacked the small stone in the ninth video down and thought you might like to see the inside. This is the classic Stoney Creek brecciated agate jasper. Some times you can still find it in larger slabs - back in the day I bet you could just walk right down to the water and pick up large cobbles of it.

Tommy, You've done what I've always wanted to do - document a hounding trip & share it. Thanks for the effort you put into sharing it with us. Fun times rockhounding a Calif. creek! Lynn
