I've been stalking this forum for a bit and figured it was high time to join and introduce myself.
I've been collecting rocks since I was a wee one, but really had no idea what to actually do with them once I got my hands on them. I thought I was stuck just looking at them until I could afford thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Last year, we discovered our local lapidary club and haven't looked back since then. My favorites so far are cabbing agates and jasper, though I do have a parcel of fire agate on the way so I'll get to try my hand at some carving once I do enough research.

Welcome jet, you have an auspicious beginning. Fire agate is the very best and can evoke more cuss words than almost any other stone!

Welcome jet , you have an auspicious beginning. Fire agate is the very best and can evoke more cuss words than almost any other stone! Funny you should say that.... we had our Gem and Mineral show this last weekend and I picked up some boulder opal. And after much dithering on my part, a couple of pieces of Ethiopian Opal (DB Opals out of Minnesota..I think...). He said THAT was pretty much guaranteed to make me turn the air blue with cuss words. Challenge accepted.

Awesome! I have an old buck knife I've had since I was a teenager - one of these days I'm going to put on my big boy pants and try to make rock handles for it. Scares me to death because I don't want to screw up

Beginner? Nope, you are already there!
BTW, I think that is Picasso Marble. Fantastic job on both of them!

Scares me to death because I don't want to screw up Thanks, there is definitely a bit of a learning curve. As you can see, I screwed up on the ocean jasper. One of the old timers seems to think I can fix it with a bit of epoxy. There are pins to attach the handle to the base, I'm terrified to try to drill into the rock. I just want to epoxy/glue it together but several of the club members are encouraging me to drill. You should try it! We can learn together!

Love those knife handles. I've only made cabs, never to fit a specific size. I'm inspired. Thank you for sharing.
