So in a couple weeks I'm flying to Salt Lake City, driving to Moab for a photography conference, then driving back to SLC. According to google, there are a fair number of rock shops along that route. (Unfortunately I don't have time for rockhounding unless it's VERY close in to Moab).
I don't have tons of time, but time enough for a couple of quick stops probably. Any particular shops I should try to stop at?
Thanks!

Hi Susan I know there used to be a killer rock shop in Moab with spectacular dino bone and yellow cat agate, but that was about 16 years ago. Even then, the good stuff was not cheap but they had wonderful stuff. It might have been Ottinger's but I can't say for sure. You know, if you do have any time, Yellow Cat is very close to Moab...just sayin'. I haven't been there in 16 years, so its possibly impossible to find anything now. Craig

Looks like Lin Ottinger's Moab Rock Shop is still in business. At least, they have a website: www.moabrockshop.com/Right on the main drag.

Although it is in Ogden which is a burb of SLC, I visited Brysons Rock Shop on 326 Washington in my travels (801-399-2838) !! Think of it as Tony Catmandewe's in SLC. Well worth the visit...He is very knowledgeable and prices are good too.!!

There's a rock shop in Helper just off Hwy 6 on Main Street. Nothing big, but may be a nice break in the drive down. Here's a Google Maps Link

That rock shop in Helper is more of a tourist trinket shop, not the kind with rough or slabs. Lynn

Good to know, thanks Lynn. However sometimes I need a set of sandstone bookends as much as the next tourist . . .

Good to know, thanks Lynn. However sometimes I need a set of sandstone bookends as much as the next tourist . . . There's a shop in Moab that mines their own sandstone & makes bookends, business card holders, etc. They're on the east side of the Main drag. Just north of the Kokopelli Gift shop (I think). The same family has the original location in Kanab, UT. Lynn
