I had a great time this Saturday on my second annual rock hounding trip with Jugglerguy. I even got my youngest son Andrew to join us this time. It was a long day with 8 hours of driving involved but we had absolutely beautiful weather for the 5 hours of walking. The water was super clear and rocks were plentiful. The Petoskey stones were hiding a little better then the pudding stones. Pudding stones jump right out at you with the bright red jaspers in the water. I like this photo of Rob and Andrew. This one really shows off the clearness of the water and the abundance of rocks to choose from. I don't usually post any pictures of myself on here but Rob took a pretty good picture of me and my boy. Now for the pictures you really wanted to see when you clicked on this thread This one reminded my son of dino bone so he brought it home. I am sure all the color will wash off. Thanks for looking Chuck

Awesome haul, looks like a great trip. I must admit the 3rd group of rocks are my favorite.

I had a great time on Saturday. This was the second time I got to spend some time with Andrew. I went up to Drummond Island a couple years ago and he demonstrated his ability to find pudding stones in the woods. Yesterday, I'm pretty sure he won the contest for finding the most pudding stones again. He also won the skipping stones from a sitting position contest, but I took the prize for the best beach rock juggling. Chuck wins for the most hours behind the wheel. My wife and son were using both of our vehicles, so I even made him drive from my house to the lake.
In that first picture, I was out in deep water just to float those two biggest pudding stones back. I only have one inner tube float bucket, so poor Chuck had to carry a very heavy bucket the old fashioned way. That might be the biggest haul of pudding stones I've ever taken off that beach.

That's sure a different way to collect than we can do here, but looks plenty successful. On average, about how far from shore can you wade out? Thanks for the show.

Awesome haul, looks like a great trip. I must admit the 3rd group of rocks are my favorite. I agree that the third ones look great in that photo but the majority of those are Gowganda Tillite which has very little demand in jewelry and does not tumble really well due to hardness differences. When walking for miles those usually get left behind to make room for more valuable stones due to weight. Chuck

I would say about 20 feet from shore in most spots to still have a good view of the rocks. I think covered it pretty good with three of us walking the same area twice. In the photo with me and my kid you can see that almost all of the rocks look white on the beach but then in the water all the colors stand out. Finding Petoskey stones on a dry beach is very difficult. We did not collect any of those rocks dry. Chuck

Super awesome haul! I bet that water was chilly. Thanks for posting. I love trip reports! Nah, the water was a balmy 40 degrees already. Actually I think my waders may have had holes and mine and my kids feet were completely soaked and surprisingly neither of us got cold. Chuck

Thanks for taking us along with your son. The things we do with our kids when we can will always be the best of our memories. I really like the Petoskys. Someday I am going to buy some to tumble.

Well said. There is no chance my 18 yr old son would spend 8 hrs driving and 5 hours looking for rocks with me right now. He did stuff just like this with me when he was 12 years old though and loved it too. Chuck
