This is the first time that I've worked with ammolite. After I finished cutting the cab, I coated its slightly concave surface with 330 epoxy and all was good. It sat for a few months before I decided to create a pendant. I opted for an epoxy set because of its vertical edges, so I figured that it would make sense remove the existing epoxy layer and do both the setting and new top coat in one operation. That didn't work out well. There were some fibers on the ammolite or between the "scales" that I couldn't see. I couldn't even see them after the epoxy was smooth and still fluid. But at some point during the curing process they eventually managed to float to the surface. Crap! So now I had to remove the top layer of the epoxy and do it over. That seemed to work well but for some unknown reason, the surface was hazy as if it had been finely abraded. What to do?! I decided to try to restore the polished surface by taking a small amount of 50k diamond paste and working it around the surface with my finger. It worked really well and didn't take all that long. The bezel is 20 gauge that is slightly higher than the ammolite for protection. The other stone is a 5 mm garnet.

Very nice - clean design and excellent concept/workmanship. Makes me want to get out the torch and go to work on several fine ammolites I have squirreled away. One of these days...

Great smithing there! Love the center bead. You wouldn't think it would hold it all together but it looks mighty tough. Great work!

Looks like it was worth all the effort. I love the bezel being a little higher- nice touch... and practical.

Ammolite? Must be a small caliber. Seriously, nice job.
