Hi all. Got this at an antique place today. It was black with tarnish, which i mostly removed. I am having trouble identifying the stone. First I thought maybe agate, then jasper. It has several hallmarks (fiddled with the editor till you could mainly see them). I didn't realize the stone had hairline cracks till I looked thru the loupe. I could polish them out easily but I don't think I will. None of them look dangerous. Help anyone? There's an S with a line through it, and what looks like an arrow with 3 blades. I dunno. It's quite hefty, a lot of sterling and a big cab, but I really liked it over an older garnet ring. The stone is just stunning. Thanks!

I think Leopard jasper (Mexico). I don't know about the cast-in marks (you could google Mexican hallmarks). Wonder if it could be coin silver? You'd have to test.

Yeah, I think it's leopardskin, too.

Yeah, I think it's leopardskin, too. Thanks. I asked a geologist friend and he says chalcecony/agate. This is tougher than it looks. I was so sure it was agate but then wavered to jasper.... Since I'm not selling it, I guess it doesn't matter. But do you think I should lightly polish out the scratches? Or leave it. I smacked it into the wall yesterday, wearing it less than 2 hours, it's easy to see why there are so many hairline cracks The cab is big and sits very high.

lol it is leopard skin, but it's not a hard Jasper but a softer rhyolite. Be careful as it tends to undercut and.... just treat it like any other softer stone.
