Patience is the #1 hardest lesson to learn in this hobby. I will tell you that after running a couple of hundred barrels, it still feels like Christmas when I break the seal on the barrel. I am much better about letting them run for a week at a time now, but that's because I'm usually so busy that I don't get a chance to peek.

I had enough rocks ready for step 2, so I moved them on. How long is the best for this step?

Thanks. How long should I run steps 3 and the polish? Your choice really. Perhaps start at one week each for those just to establish a baseline. That's what I did in the beginning. I'm still making adjustments. In my latest batch(es) I ran step 3 for two weeks straight (no cleanout), and polish for 10 and 14 days respectively. I have a batch in polish now that has been going for 14 days thus far. I may pull them out in another week. Have you read this thread yet? The tutorial there has a fair amount of good info. Dave

@pandagem Adave does a great job and he's rotary only. Best for advice but you are the best to decide what your rocks need to make you happy. Many people look at their rocks after the prescribed time and then decide if they got all the tiny scratches that the preceding coarser grit left. Some even use a jewelers loupe. Then they bump to next smaller size. At first like you are now we were all impatient and wanted to move things up. The only possible bad thing would be that they may not be perfect but probably perfect to you. You can always run them again back a few steps of grit. No penalty. Bet there are some of your rocks that have become old friends and also think you probably have other rocks now that you are dying to start tumbling and want the tumbler open for them. Probably people on here have sent or would send you some of their tumble to share with you. Need them to go faster?? The solution for that is buy a bigger tumbler or have the hubby build you a double barrel larger one. We all pretty have the same experience that you are at now.

I started stage three today. I added plastic pellets to cushion them also.

Thanks for the update. Ever think about using a clay-based slurry to cushion your rocks and to carry the grits? Know that you need to use the pellets from only that particular stage as the grit gets embedded in the plastic and would scratch the finer grit stage following. Don't do rotary only like aDave so curious which is best and most used.

I thought about doing the slury, but I thought that I would try the pellets first. And I know that you can only use them for the same stage, I have enough left to use new ones for the polish.

I bought plastic pellets long ago, still sitting in bags. There was another use for them but don't remember what it was, so I have just saved them.. Along with a truckload of string.. hehehe. Thinking of a second tumbler yet? You've shown amazing self control. Regards to Lola.

Thinking of a second tumbler yet? You've shown amazing self control. Regards to Lola. Sooooo, I got a second tumbler. My tumbler was making a weird clicking sound, and I couldn't find anything about trouble shooting in the manual, so I emailed the company wanting to know if wd40 was safe to use on it. They emailed me back, and said that it was safe, but they were replacing the tumbler free of charge because it shouldn't be doing that. The shipped it and it should be here in 7-10 days. Lola says hi
