Yesterday, I dragged my wife on a little rock scouting trip to a Lake Huron beach. The Sturgeon Point Lighthouse is about half an hour south of here. I was looking on Google Maps for public places to access the lake that might have some Petoskey stones. This looked somewhat promising. I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't think I've ever been here before, even though I've lived in this area my whole life. I guess I'm not a big fan of history or lighthouses. Here's the lighthouse. This is as close as we got. I figured the rocks would be better near the water. The beach was fairly sandy. Who wants that??? The rocks were more like pebbles, so I wasn't going to be brining home any giant specimens. I talked to a man who was looking for rocks with his young daughter. He said they had found a Petoskey stone and he hand found one the size of his palm the day before. He showed me a tiny one from his daughter's bucket. As I said, the rocks were tiny, so I still wasn't hopeful. This is what I ended up with after a ten minute walk. Drummond Island Rocks, how do you like that pudding stone? I donated my finds to the girls bucket on the way back to the car. We also saw a medium sized snapping turtle on the beach. I tried to get pictures, but it kept swimming into the water whenever we got close. I took some pictures of it in the water, but it was rough so the water was cloudy and it didn't show up at all. I won't be coming back here for rocks, but it was a nice little trip with my wife.

The best thing is putting the stones you found in that girls bucket, very nice and good job. So I trip was success.
I think I read somewhere that there are no more manned lighthouses. Not sure.

Beautiful spot Rob thanks for taking us along. Sorry about the sand I know that feeling when you arrive at a beach and it's sand and not rocks. In N.CA you have to wait for after a strong winter storm clears the annoying sand away then it's usually rocks galore Still sounds like a good day and I bet you made that little girl's day.

Too bad there weren't more rocks but it was a good day for a trip. That little girl is probably still talking about the nice man who gave her rocks. WTG

Looks like you had good weather for the lake walk . Great Sand Bay in the Keweenaw is usually all sand beach so we never stop . Two years ago we drove by and it was nothing but rocks , spent better part of the day there .
