I won't be forging. Just shape and assemble.

Me neither, but I already have a couple nice damascus blanks that need decent bolsters.

Michael Hoover used to have an excellent tutorial in making knife handles, but it seems to have been taken down . He gives a great step by step presentation from taking the old handles off to putting the new ones on. The only thing i do differently is I prefer to do most of my stone work on a dop stick. He prefers to work the stone in the knife blank. For me working the stone in the knife is just an opportunity to damage the bolsters. Here's a link to an old forum post Michael did on the subject (no pictures): gemstone.smfforfree4.com/index.php/topic,4648.0.html

WHat glue do you use to glue the stone and metal together ? I use JB Weld 5 minute epoxy. It gives me enough time to position the stone, but does not keep me waiting forever for the epoxy to cure. Rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip cleans up the epoxy that squeezes out. I also use tarp clamps to keep the stone in the knife while it cures.

Super fun Paul! I challenge you to make the entire knife now. I'll start with fixed blade. I'm getting ready to order some 3/32 440c, some matching bolster material and make a few kitchen knives for Christmas presents. Long term I want to make folders. When you're getting ready to move on it create a thread and tag me please. I now have a home made gas forge. Don't think I want to assemble all the tools to do full-on blacksmithing, but there may be some mokume gane in my future. Yeah, didn't happen. Life is passing me by. I'm ready for a job change.
