Mrs. Nethers let's folks use a backhoe . Been 2 years since I was there. I lucked up and some knappers were there with a backhoe and they let us pick thru their pile !!! Hey you ain't gotta be good if you are lucky!!! Not much in the east coast area to knapp or cab. Jamesp has sotrme incredible coral that knapps really well and also cabs! Hardest dang stuff I ever tried to grind! LOL Good Morning Bill. So you can use a backhoe. Great. Wonder where the closest place is to rent one? Might just find a local who digs by the hour than to rent one and have it delivered. Dig down past the grey stuff and into the colored material with chalcedony. Did it seem like the backhoe had enough uhmmff to get down in that hard stuff? Did it seem to damage the material any? Yeah those knappers sure do, do us all a favor by being such a picky crew. Gotta love those guys. Looking at orrum How much did you end up getting and were you happy with all that you got. Would you dig it again or are you more liking some of the banded cherts? Any pictures of the material heat-treated versus the natural flint? Bet that jamesp does, hes a good documenter.

Cliff, Some of the material I sent Gayle was heat treated Flint ridge. Most of the stuff I found was surface finds. Got a few pieces for knapping but mostly found stuff for lapidary work. Sure is a nice quiet area. I also heard of Coshocton Flint found north of Flint Ridge, it's darker generally but they say it knapps like a dream.

Cliff the hoe will dig it with a lot of gouging and scrapping. The colored stuff is very deep, like 15 feet or so. Remember ancient man dug every bit of this, they built fires snd threw snow and water on the hot rock to fracture it. You will see the fire blackened layers when you get deep enough. The flint is in layers, so you wedge up a lAyer at a time. To tell the truth it ain't worth the trip sgain. We got 2 five gallon buckets full and b it's mostly tumbles and some cabbing but it's a hard rock on saw blades. Go to Royiller down the road. He is a flint k n aping guru with flint ridge materisl. He has his own quarry now and the rock you buy from him will be pretty colors and solid without fractures. I got my materisl.from his old pit at Nethrrs, the guy digging with the hoe is his protégé and took over his pit. He digs twice a year with a rented backhoe for a weekend. They spall it out in the pit and then put all the stuff back in the pit to keep people out of their good stuff.

Have any pictures of that Flint Ridge for email? HAvepictures of some that Dale sent me. Un heated. HAve a source for a man that digs it and will sned a box but would like a lot more than that. Have friends that would love to get a box and I am bad for Christmas shopping. hehehe Have some but like the most input I can get. Studying a few different minerals hard so I can hit up big sets of material. Flint Ridge is an interesting place. orrum Bill says backhoe and I believe that for sure. Maybe talk to a couple local backhoe operators and see if anyone has dug there before and can dig us a deep hole down to the prettier stuff below the gray. Gotta love the knappers though. I love their throw aways. grin.. Bill might be interested in the Coshocton . He knapps and bet that he's familiar with it. Heck I bet his horse and dog all know about it. hehehe Have a good weekend Frank Good Health to you !!

Seen his videos on heat treating and several on the digging of the giant nodules . Haven't had any luck getting hold of him though. He's not an easy man to run down and probably values his free time more than money. Would his protégé be either Bill Weaver or Ed Moreland? People in that neck of the woods are hard to run down. That working for a living makes it hard to have fun.. grin.. May keep trying Roy because he does have all that waste material that they get has after spalling and maybe he has someone to box, barrel and sell it. Regards to the lovely wife. orrum

Ed Moreland was the guy I met. He!! on wheels with a solid copper spaller! Roy has the green and blue stuff. Heat treatment makes the colors change wonderful.
