Just an FYI - To tag Deb/nyllynn use @ nyllynn (no space), and Mark K is @ foxtail (no space). Otherwise, you are tagging other people. But, hey, that's okay, too.

I have a hard time distinguishing Deschutes from Biggs sometimes. In your opinion, what is the easiest way to determine which is which? I was thinking hers was a lower grade deschutes. Easiest - and most fun - way was to paw through hundreds or thousands of pounds of rough and slabs for both direct from the miners' shops, but that sadly is no longer an option. I'm glad I got to do that some before the old timers closed up. I even tried asking for a description of the differences, but all I ever got was along the lines of "Look there, that's Biggs. Look there, that's Deschutes." Eventually, it is easy to see in-hand, not so easy to describe. If you have a piece of rough, then the rind on Deschutes is a pale tan-peach, porous opalite that is distinct from the rinds on Biggs jasper from Fulton Canyon, original US97 Blue Biggs/Lace dig, China Hollow and Rufus material. Rind on other Biggs material I've seen is either a richer brown or grayer. Some of the hard-opalized Deschutes had an orangey rind that was also distinctive. "Biggs" encompasses a roughly triangular area encompassing 7-8 square miles running between points south of the small town of Biggs, south of the town Rufus and north of the village of Wasco with several mines. Deschutes was a single outcrop miles to the west of the "Biggs Triangle" area. There are several sites in that triangle. There are differences in density (Deschutes can be very dense, almost glasslike, Rufus Biggs can be light and fairly porous), size of the grain inclusions (finer for most Deschutes, a bit bigger grains in the original dig, some quite large grains in Fulton Canyon and China Hollow). If you have a slab, then (to me) the first thing that strikes me is pattern. Is the pattern looser and/or larger (more often in Biggs), or tight (more often in Deschutes)? This isn't always conclusive on its own, either, because as you said, there is some lower quality and atypical Deschutes that can have loose patterns, and there is some Biggs that can have areas of tighter patterns. Even in a fraction of higher quality pieces, the patterns can be similar. There are some small differences in the layering, even in similar patterns, which brings us to color... Deschutes generally tends to have darker/more saturated colors (absolutely not always, so just another factor to consider), and the color palettes do differ between them (and between various Biggs sites). Color for these jaspers is something that rarely comes across well in photos, even with good lighting and proper white balance set - and not even the popular jasper websites and books get it right, IMO. Easier to detect in person, less easy in words or photos. Some colors I associate more with Deschutes (rosy reds, purple-blue, magenta), and some more with Biggs (blue the color of blue fountain pen ink). Except for "sky" pieces in both, the blue in Deschutes tends to be tight brushstrokes within the hill patterns, while the blue in most Biggs tends to be looser brushstrokes that float more freely in folded pattern or between wider-spaced hill layers. Probably as unclear as my previous attempts to explain, though In the case of the pictured slab, I see the fat reddish bands combined with the wispy folds/brush-strokes, and I immediately think "Biggs."

The only reason it could ever be construed as unclear is that you have such a deep knowledge and present a lot of insight flawlessly through your years of experience. No guessing just confidence that comes from competency of a great magnitude. Thank you. Cliff
