Before I knew any better, I bought a grit kit from a random eBay seller. The "prepolish" turned out to be 400 grit SiC. It seems that everyone here uses 500 or 600 AO for that stage.
What do y'all think the outcome would be if I use the 400 SiC? Maybe let it break down for 10 days or so? I have some 1000 AO. Should I follow it up with that before going into polish?

AO is best for finishing siC is best for cutting. But finer grades of SiC do OK for pre-finish.

I run 1000 Ao for prepolish. If the scratches from one grits size are gone, move on to the next. I go from 500 to 1000 then polish. 2-3 days in a vibe unless the the rocks seem to need a little longer. Best go a bit longer Bill than too short. A few sets and you'll have it figured out. Not out anything by experimenting.
