I did a search first, and found plenty of threads recommending wearing a mask if you grind, and some good data about silicosis, but no mention of what mask to wear. I've been looking online at 3m respirators, but am struggling to figure out which filter to get for the 6500 or 7500 series half masks. Any help would be appreciated.

Dust masks are really about taking care of larger particles in the air. OSHA does not consider them "respiratory protection" as dust masks have gaps and do not form a seal with your face. For exposure concerns you want a real live respirator which may be tricky to get and hard to validate that you have the right one.

in our foundry 99 percent of the areas an m95 "respirator" is all that is required by osha. and the air quality isn't that great. being in maintenance we go into the other 1 percent areas and have to fit test for "real" respirators every year. remember or respirators to work properly you have to be smooth shaved all the time.

On line is not the best place for your first respirator. You will need to be fitted. Different faces, different masks. Then you will need either P99 or P95 filters cartridges. P for 'particulate'. 99 and 95 for the percent of particular matter of a certain size that will be removed by the filter. Find a safety store and see if they will fit you.
Read and follow directions on cleaning and cartridge replacement.
