Q 2018

So when is the get together in Q this year?
I am thinking about it, but might go a week later to avoid blizzards like last year.

Q 2018

I'd love to go, but I'm left with some questions.
I don't have an RV, so I wouldn't be staying in town. More likely, I'd be staying at the CA/AZ border and driving in for the show(s). My concern would be parking after I drive in. Any insight to such a plan would be helpful. Thanks and regards.

Parking is no problem for Desert Gardens. In town you may have to walk a bit. The actual Pow Wow has plenty of parking. Hey I am a old fat one legged cowboy and I can walk it. You can also stay in Parker Az.

Yes the BBQ this year is on the 20th. Parking at Desert Gardens is plentiful. Desert Gardens booted Diamond Pacific so I am not sure about the logistics of the BBQ this year since we wont have the use of the building for food and table storage and refrigerator and such.

Yes Desert Gardens is the best! Plus it lasts longer. Pow Wow is more finished things to me. You wsnt to see what's new and different then Desert Gardens is it.
Wow Tony I can't believe Diamond Pacific is gone!!

I had not heard about DP but guess they did not want to continue renting the building for the year for 5-6 weeks of declining sales. I know our sales have dropped every year since 2008. Like big drops of 20-30%. I think it was last year DP told me they sold no equipment the whole show. We will be at Pow Wow providing we have a good show at Denver. Could be a Pow Wow close out show too.

Desert Gardens management is something else. Do they want the building for year round events or what? Seems like Diamond Pacific is the "anchor" for the show like the two or three big stores at malls.

So, Bill doesn't own the building. I wonder who gave a better offer? A materials exporter like Morroco? John of the new HP? A retired poultry farmer that wants the building for her guinea fowl?

So, is Desert Gardens THE venue to see? Hey, Dave For me, Desert Gardens is the first place to go. You can find great material at good, honest prices. But I can't find everything I am looking for at any one show, so my next show to hit is the Pow Wow. Many of the big miners like Rare Rocks and Gems (Phillip) and The Gem Shop (Gene Mueller) can be found at the Pow Wow. Great materials but top of the market prices. There are also some things to be said for the vendors at the buildings south of Tyson Wells. I usually go to Desert Gardens the first day or two, then come back into town for the first day or two of the Pow Wow. If I could get out of work more I'd make a week of it, but not in the cards. Hope that helps! Craig

Dave Hi Dave - before we bought our trailer last year we did the commute between Blythe and Q for several years. It's not a problem at all - quick in and out. Regarding parking - we've found parking at the PowWow every year with zero trouble at all. There is street parking all around the event and they also have a good sized parking lot on the east side of the event. Same story with Desert Gardens - nothing to worry about. The *big* problem area is the Tyson swap meet area - it's do-able on a midweek day but by Saturday we do everything we can to avoid the area completely including Main street through town. Traffic becomes gridlocked in places getting across the freeway - the worst area is the overpass at Central Blvd. All of this is because there is no freeway exit at Central blvd (95). Every year we think maybe by next year they will get something done about it but nothing happens...

Don told me when the building was built they had the choice to pay the show fee for the time they were at the show (in which case the building would be used by others for other events) or pay for 12 months and have it for their exclusive use. They opted for that. If we make it back next year will have to see what goes in there. Last year we sold there the new manager was mostly focusing on selling prefab buildings to the vendors and jacking up fees.

Dave There are dozens of homemade videos of the Quartzite show posted on YouTube that help give a good overview of the layout of the town, available camping, and with what to expect vendor wise. Well, from my perspective they can use some "stores" and some campers. A good mix of both. For instance a couple restaurants wouldn't hurt. Maybe the Hindus get a building and bring more inventory... I can see a balanced mix of permanent buildings and campers making a beautiful synergy. Of course losing DP sucks.

I can't wait to see what the DP dealers will do. You couldn't throw a rock without hitting a DP dealer. Many were low balling prices just to make a sale. Of course the product was in the DP building for convenient pick up. Without them there only stocking dealers will be able to compete.

Hope that helps! Craig aDave , Craig has it exactly. I usually go to Desert Gardens on 1/1 for a day or two, then go back for the Wed-Fri of Pow Wow. If you're still looking for exclusively tumbling rough, you'll like Desert Gardens much more. Pow Wow is good for when you need a change, want fancier material (or just different vendors), and you can also find tumbling rough, but there is more finished jewelry, $$$ things like turquoise, and slabs at the Pow Wow. (You're still probably going to have to break down the rough yourself; few if any are selling it pre-broken down.) For you I would recommend going during Pow Wow week but focusing on DG first. When you've seen everything there, head over to Pow Wow. Blythe is an ok place to stay, since it has some less expensive hotels, and more choice (more being the operative word here) of restaurants, but for me the time change at the border every time completely throws me off. So I stay at the Ehrenberg Best Western just on the AZ side of the border. I used to stay at the Super 8 right in Q, which was super convenient, but then they appeared in the bedbug registry, and I had a couple of not so awesome experiences there. The most important thing is MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS ASAP esp if you're going during Pow Wow. At some point in the year they jack the rates for Pow Wow week - you can get the rooms much cheaper if you book earlier.
