Sweet slab!!
Actually this could be rhodonite mixed with other minerals...it looks very similar to material I have that came out of the Butte MT mine back in the day. Do you know its provenance?
The material I have was ore mined to extract manganese, I fortunately scored a nice stockpile of the material. Some of the material I have is primarily rhodonite + and other is primarily rhodochrosite +...It makes for stunning cabs - various tones of pink mixed with pyrite.
Cheers

Granite
Rhodonite oxidizes to black on the environment.

Pyrite (an acid derived salt of iron) and rhodonite (a base derived salt of manganese) would be wierd together.

Rhodochrosite and pyrite are the slabs I was referring to at the end, sorry for confusion. I am not suggesting that is what smittys got - rather his material does look very familiar to the rhodonite in the lot of manganese ore I have. Just basing my statement on pictures and my familiarity with materials. Hard to tell on something like this from photos alone. Agreed that rhodonite will oxidize. smittys - do you know location it was sourced? cheers
