Hi folks, I was out rockhounding in my backyard...well, not exactly...but I picked up a rock that my wife had placed in a flower pot some years ago. I'd never noticed until she removed it to prep for transplanting a plant. She thinks she found it on her parents property in western Ventura County (northeast end of Simi Valley) where fossilized shells (oyster, turitella, clams) can be pretty regularly found. However, she can't say for sure. It is a bit larger than a baseball. I was not able to scratch it with a scratch awl or file. My first wild ass guess was palm of some sort, but I really don't know. Sabre52, since you lived near here, any ideas? Thanks and regards. Dave Pictured wet:

Don't see vascular bundles that would indicate palm. There is wood in Ventura county as close as Camarillo but what you have looks like a quartzite cobble to me. Those are common there....Mel

It may get cut soon just to see what it looks like inside. @shotgunner will probably be helping with that if my saw is not available soon. After my note about palm, I did some searching and this didn't seem to be it. I guess at the end of the day this would be leaverite, but I thought I would ask anyway. Best regards. Dave

I dunno about leaverite. May be. But could be cool inside. One cut tells the story
I'm with Mel on the quartzite front. That shit is everywhere!!

I think that is a artifact. Looks a lot like a Hammerstone that I have.

Might be an artifact. Stick ball? These were covered with leather and used in a hockey type game. Very popular.

I think that is a artifact. Looks a lot like a Hammerstone that I have. Interesting. Never even considered that, as I don't think I have ever seen one. But, now that you mention it, I think they had found a stone bowl/mortar of sorts on or near the property when they were growing up. I may have the time frame confused, but I think the piece is in the breezeway of their house. There were certainly indians in the area (Chumash) back in the day. Thanks for the input. @shotgunner, if there is potential about this being an artifact, I will probably spare it from the saw. Dave
