Awesome thread, and I have nothing to add but trying to give jamespanol, tireless scientific juggernaut, 3 thumbs up.
But I'm a tumbler. Born under punches. Colin

What size and what machine did you use John ? can't just stick a photo out there Curious minds... Bet the grind marks were gone in a week ? are they finished, they look polished(or wet) ? Your reflection in them taking the photo. Hey, I have tumbled barrel full of small slabs - all flat rocks. takes a while. And the center of the flat areas do not get as good a polish. Maybe they get stuck together, or there is less rubbing in the center of the flat areas. Whatever, they had a crap polish in the center. So maybe that means a barrel full of spheres is make the best grind ? Don't know. do believe closer to round rocks grind faster.

they range in size from about 2.25 to 1.75 about as big a cube as I could cut with my cheapie tile saw. I rough ground them on a bench grinder with stacked diamond blades. then spent a week or so in rotary a week in vibe. 2 of them came out of polish last week and the other 7 Thursday

That has been my turn around time. The grinding to near sphere shape is the work out. Hoping to reduce the grind hassle. Wish to fill barrel with 100% spheres. Did you add water on the stacked blades or grind dry ? Sawing cubes out of big rocks with a big rock saw does make the grind process easier. Consider doing a discoidal shape too. I almost favor it over the spheres. Are those top 2 spheres Stone Canyon ? Did you think the rose quartz ground faster than the agate ? AND, are any of those other spheres Rio material ? Too many questions.

right now I just take the grinder outside and dry. I have to make the shrouds yet. made the catch pan base plate or whatever you want to call it a month or 2 ago. just pushed on back burner so I use it dry for now. the rose quarts didn't realy seem to grind any faster at least that I noticed. not surprising its a mohs 7. the rose quartz I bought at a show, the small whiteish one I got off of you. the rest were from a box of bigger stuff I bought off fish. no idea what the material of the top 2 are but they undercut in the tumbler pretty bad.

Curious about the undercut on those two. I pick the hardest most solid material for doing the spheres. Sounds like you will have your grinder running in water, that's a good thing. This is my Vibrasonic vibe. Note that it has a 1/8" thick PVC divider in it to separate the 2 big rocks from hitting each other. They are in the polish mode. I let the vibe run continuous and am polishing several sets of 2 big rocks using the same polish. Polish is reusable to a point. I am on same schedule, SiC 30 or your raw grit in the rotary which is working just fine for coarse grind. Then AO 80, and AO polish both in vibe. Using the bulk SiC 30 and still liking it. Stopped using the slower 30 RPM shafts, spinning the 6 inch PVC at 55 RPM/80% fill/clay slurry thickener/1 whole cup of the bulk grit. One week, then clean out. The bulk grit seems to break down best with at least one 12-14 ounce rock in the barrel. That one rock has a big impact on grind. Serves as a bulk grit cracker. Every once in a while I will have a couple of 3/8" chunks of bulk SiC after the week run. Ha, rounded as if a tumble. 6" Barrel speed 55 RPM, slurry quite thick

if your pipe was a little taller I would say maybe a water soaked sponge wedged in it. not actually touching buy just high enough to keep it from hopping. I'll try that. And some other down force materials. It could use something with shock absorber effect like your sponge idea. That blade is screaming fast at 3600 RPM. Any way you could use a water filled bag of sorts for it to bounce against and could be hardened or softened by water fill. Think douche bag.. No James not like your X's mom., hehehe

ETA: I'll go back to the penguin avatar when the libtards find something that disturbs them more than a Confederate flag. Rebel flag avatar is maximum piss of a libtard bang for your buck right now.

I made parts for a couple friends some years ago, they used a tube ~3" dia. about 10" long, mounted over a belt sander. In the steel tube was a piece of PVC pipe with a cap on the business end. Chunk of rubber glued or riveted to pipe cap. Worked fairly well.
