My son and I are continuing what we started earlier in the summer, looking for agates, petrified wood, and other finds near the Badlands of South Dakota. The one I'm showing here is unique compared to all our other finds. We've found plenty of small bubblegum agates and I guess what I'd call a button agate (not sure that's the right term), agates that have had interesting protrusions. This one is quite a bit bigger than those however (about 3.5" across) and has an appearance unlike any other. What would you call it? The other side has even more "topography", but not as "clean" as this side. I did a lot of cleaning up on the back side to remove lichens and black staining (manganese oxide?).

Reminds me of some of my fossil coral/sponge finds. A possible in that area. Am sure more experienced here will be able to help with ID.

Odd one for sure. Bubble Gum agate comes from that area, but I don't think this is that. Maybe...? Sabre52

For my two cents, I'd call it a bubblegum agate. Just had the tops worn off some of the bumps. I've tumbled bubblegums that come out looking a lot like that...Mel

You know, I'd leave it as is and not cut it. Big tendency for that sort of nodule to be prettier on the exterior and if ya cut them, just kind of cream colored and yucky inside, often with voids. Some are really solid but those usually show solid eyes on the exterior bubbles. Yours is an awesome specimen as is and if it were me, I'd keep it that way. Just my two cents....Mel

It's so cool as is, wouldn't want to take a chance that might not payoff...
