I am new to rock tumbling. My name is Tom and I'm in Mount Prospect, Illinois just outside of Chicago. As a child, my Father tried to convince me each year to ask Santa for a Rock tumbler. As a kid, I was more interested in toys and always resisted. Now that my Father is no longer alive, I realize that he was interested in rock tumbling and for whatever reason tried to interest me as well. Fast forward many years and as an adult and gardener, I purchased 20,000 pounds of flagstone from a homeowner in my neighborhood. The flagstones were filthy and needed to be cleaned. I purchased a power washer and in the process fell in love with rocks and the eons of history they contain. Feeling guilty for denying my father a simple pleasure, I am all in to truly enjoy this hobby and make him proud.

Don't beat yourself up over it, he would be happy to know you've decided to take an interest in it now. I came to the hobby much the same way, except I am the father in this scenario. Santa brought my boys a Lortone 33B and a pile of rocks on Christmas, 2015. They liked the idea for a while, but got bored with the pace of geology. I, on the other hand, learned more and more about the rocks I was purchasing and got hooked. I liked learning how and why the stones form the way they do, and am still amazed when I look at them. Dig in, read up and enjoy your new hobby!
And welcome!

My story is much the same as Garage Rocker. My son was attracted to polished rocks in gift shops, so we bought him a tumbler for Christmas. His interest lasted a couple of years, but has long since gone. My interest remains. Welcome to the club!

My parents bought me (and my son) a tumbler some 20 years ago. We used it for a while, but when he got into baseball at age 7, it got tucked away until he got done playing baseball in college. Now, I use that tumbler, along with some others to roll rocks. It's a great hobby. Welcome to the group. You'll have a great time.
