Been doing a bit of remodeling and left a few scraps of drywall out in the rain last night. Got me to wondering if small chunks would work as a thickener. Might try it later today when I do a cleanout/recharge.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience?

So... I tore the paper off a ~1" square chunk of 5/8" drywall and threw it into a fresh second stage run in a 1.5lb. barrel. Checked an hour later. No slurry, but the water had become opaque.

Checked again after 6 hours. Still no slurry, but it looked like a bubble bath in there. Added a 2nd, slightly larger, chunk of drywall. Not going to open it again until next Friday for the cleanout.

Gypsum is a salt that is partially soluble so you have minute particles dissolved and suspended in the water. Nothing to thicken.
Try kitty litter

This would be bentonite, which is commonly used as a thickener in certain applications. Some kitty litter is zeolite instead of bentonite. You can get clay kitty litter cheap at the .99 cent store.

Thanks, guys. I'm aware of bentonite/kitty litter. I just got a wild hair up my behind when I saw how gummy the scraps of drywall got in the rain and decided to experiment. (Maybe there's a bit of jamesp in me? Just without the "do your research first" part. <laughing>
