Sometimes you just have to make somethin' out of nothin'. On our last trip of the season to the South Cady Mountains, I picked up a colorful chip that some lucky rockhound had knocked off of what appears to be a killer piece of 4 color moss agate. It was all I had of the stone, so I figured, lets see what happens. It was too curvy to cut a flat back and have enough left over to cab, at least for my old hands, so this is what I did... (the shape was the shape of the chip, with a little smoothing out) The front, I think... The back... The curve, which actually undulates across the back. Showing off the moss... Showing off the shine (that's the ceiling of my garage) Of course, I wish I had the rest of it. I can only imagine... Thanks for looking. Hope you enjoyed... Craig

Man that is a nice moss cab! Sometimes I think those chips are left over from Amerind workings too. I also have a spectacular small piece of moss from the Cadys that had been knocked off a core in the knapping process. Best material I've ever seen from the Cadys. Same thing happens in Rio Grande agate country. So frustrating that other rockhounds and Amerinds leave behind those mouth watering spalls to tease us and make us wonder what the original hunk looked like....Mel

I love the curve in that. Maybe it will catch on and everyone will start making cabs that way.

That is freaking gorgeous Craig! I believe that somehow the physics of rock formation must dictate that the most beautiful stones only exist in the most awkward shapes! You did a great job with it though. I'd wear it! Custom setting for that would be no problem, or a wrap maybe.

That's beautiful moss. And the curved-back method of cutting is already being used by some folks in making drilled pendants. I think cutting that way adds a new element of sculptural interest and it works well if it's mounted so both sides can be seen and enjoyed.
I cut a strangely-shaped cab of rutilated quartz for the same reason you did, to take advantage of the rough shape and eliminate flaws. It's a great cab but I'm still pondering ways to set it.

Killer cab you got there. Don't get any mossier than that. Sure used the material well Craig

I love the curve in that. Maybe it will catch on and everyone will start making cabs that way. You might be onto something here. I like the 3-D aspect of this cab.

Craig, that's a gorgeous polish on that stone and I just love the colors in it. I think it was well worth salvaging, plus I really like the curve of the stone. Very nice.

Great cab I cut a lot of chips and scraps. Sometimes, like yours, I end up with something unexpectedly nice.
