If your chunk is Crown of Silver (there are different variations of psilomelane), your first challenge will be slabbing it. C of S is extremely tough and hard on diamond blades, and often can be a big problem. If you work from pre-cut slabs it's easier to deal with. I don't wear gloves for any kind of cutting so that's a personal choice. The stuff can be very messy to grind and your hands will get dirty. I do most of my cutting without dops and find gloves get in the way of manipulating stones the way I like to. Apart from the messiness it's pretty easy to work. I go from 60-grit to 220 hard wheels (both sintered) to 280, 600, 1200, 3K and 8K Novas. It usually takes a high polish on the 3K but I do the 8K anyhow. Thanks for your nice comments. Good luck with the psilomelane.

Thanks so much for your reply... It is C of S and it weighs about 3 lbs... When I slab, I use a large slab saw with a 24 inch? blade... It's one of the slab saws at my club... I'll post a pic as soon as I get one. Maybe you can give me some pointers on slabbing it... Thanks again, Deb

He slabbed mine and was a little frustrated with the project. The only advice I can give you is to slab parallel to the patterning. Most of the rough I've had came as a seam formation. If yours is like that you'll perhaps need to adhere the rough to a piece of wood to orient it properly for sawing. Ask fellow club members for their advice. Maybe someone has experience with it and can advise you on the best method/direction of sawing.
