Since this is my thread and this does fit into the "Rock shop" stuff, I have a question... captbob , jamesp , @shotgunner , 1dave , coloradocliff , and of course anyone else that wants to chime in (unless it's to tell me not to do it cause then you'll be waisting your time) INSTEAD OF THE OLD SCHOOL HEAVY ASS LONG SLEDGE HAMMER for busting open/beating into rocks in the field, wouldn't a Dewalt hammer drill with various bits-chisels-rock pick be more efficient AND save more material??? Inquiring spastic mind would like opinions! You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? (De Niro) You talkin' about this? in 1956 I was using the first electric impact hammer to be built - a Thor, to chase conduit runs in basement concrete walls. About every hour it had to be taken in for repairs. Hilti Came out with the best unit IMO. May work OK around the shop, but out in the field I advise forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/66065/jareds-rock-splitterpounding can induce fractures - never a good thing. Sawing produces usable faces, grinding can show where to cut.

I prefer hammers and sledges. Depends on rock type. Glassy coral submits to hammer blows in a hurry. Granite laughs at hammers. Loading tray of hammers into boat an hour ago, headed to coral hunt. Excited. Will be at Western Inn Quitman. Come on down if you can.

Inquiring spastic mind would like opinions! Hammer drills like a mini kack hammer. Battery heavy, go thru a lot of batteries, not legal for public lands, supposed to be a hand powered tool. How about a slide hammer for a lil gal to beat up on a rock?
1daves slide hammer would run all day and beat up some serious rock without a battery. If you are back at the truck and generator the rptary hammer drill sure would be handy for higrading your haul.

Withalacoochee for coral before Irma heads up and swamps everything again. The trips was just coming together in the last few hours. I can't get away, or I would have tossed you the invite. Might be the only time for warm water/weather collecting this year. Jump on it if you can.

Lol. Last minute as usual with coral rivers Melissa, just like Ann said. One afternoon shower can kill the trip, gotta watch the weather and USGS river gauges close. The hurricane should draw all the moisture, for a while. Impromptu about always, can't be waitin for lard asses

It's small town off the beaten path about 15 minutes from the collecting area. Interstate hotels all booked due to Irma. I have no structured plans other than hitting the river during day light.

Ya see how he is? Goes coral huntin' when he knows there isn't a chance in hell I can get away from here with a major hurricane on the horizon. Knows I will find all the good stuff! doody head Sic 'em Melissa! Go get all pit bull on his favorite coral spots. Good huntin' amigo. Be safe and I do hope the refugee traffic isn't too bad. Keep an eye on the storm. Hopefully, you will be in and out and safely back home before it gets that far north.

Thanks guys. Better if the river were lower. With deeper water I may go to a spot way further down that is productive. Not by design captbob, just the way the dices roll. Sounds like the Florida relatives are coming up for refuge. Can I come down and do your storm windows ? Help. I hope that storm does not roll up your west coast. I don't like that storm. Bad feeling Hah, a doody head is a cracker term for a coral head full of pulp, appropriate adjective. melhill1659, feel free to surprise me. If you bring extra folks be sure to bring kayaks/canoes. Either will put you on the coral. Travel safe if you make the journey. I doubt this hotel is the Ritz.

This place ain't the Ritz either though. Sheets & towels are clean, but room service around here is laughable. Probably one hell of a lot more coral here than you may come across up there! Mostly that worthless hollow stuff though.

Pretty smart using a dent puller. I have a few of those. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I get a big rock. jamesp- you be careful! That storm looks to end up in Georgia after Florida.
