I'll say this about the rock shed, it's a great place to buy tumbling rough. They are honest with their pics. That's all you can ask when purchasing online. I have purchased a lot of great rough from that site, especially the Bahia agate. I can't ever have enough of it in my barrels, it seems. I did, however, take a look at that picture jasper they offer and decide I could buy better elsewhere. Again, truth in advertising, and I respect that. It's a popular stone with beginning tumblers and I've seen a fair share of it come through the pics section from that site. Just to say...there are other sites online, as well as folks here on the forum that offer good material. I use different sources, depending on the material I'm looking for. If in doubt, just ask here. I'm sure someone will be willing to give advice if you have a specific question.

Howdy and welcome to the forum. Ditto the Rockshed and a couple others. A unique and inexpensive source of rough rock and rough tumble is Richardson Rock Ranch in Oregon. Most people think of them as thunder eggs but they sell a lot of spheres and stone sculptures they make in their shop and so their dirt cheap tumble has many things you will never see for sale as tumble. You can also buy some of their decent rough slabbing rock and break it down to tumble size. $2.00 per pound for neat tumble material.

Dammit Jim. About The Rock Shed...I like the Carnelian and Desert in the tumbling section and the Prarie and Blue/Green in the larger rocks section. When I order parts and such, I try to equal out the box with rough...along with a free Bahia. 5 years ago I was drinking more beer as my hobby of choice. Now I drink about as much beer but get more shiznit done. Gather no moss, Colin

They are a family operation, and as such, family 'situations' can and will result in lengthy delays and/or forgotten orders. It happened to me the one and only time I tried to place an order. That, and lack of flat rate shipping, has me shopping elsewhere.

It really is high on the list of places to go, in person (as a confessed rock lover), if given the chance. And I don't hold anything against them. We just had different expectations.

I have been buying rough threw the summer from several different sellers on Ebay and have yet to get good quality stones. We gather our own rocks threw the fall but it doesn't last us long enough to run year round so we resort to buying rough stones online. I was hoping some of you could share some online sellers that you deal with and buy from or maybe is there a seller in the group. Thanks in advance!! The best places to buy cutting rough in the Southeastern U.S. is at the late July shows in Franklin, NC and late July/early August shows in Spruce Pine, NC. Both locations have multiple shows being held during the same week at each town. There are also Shows in Frankiln, NC in May. Usually Mother's Day weekend. The one I prefer to attend is the GLW (Gems & Lapidary Wholesalers) show in Franklin. Although the GLW has shows held at both towns one week apart. You have to have a resale number to get in to the inside vendors but some (not all) of the outside vendors will sell retail as well. Of these my favorites for buying rough are El Paso Rock Shop, Enter The Earth, and Gem Center USA. All three have web sites where one can purchase but I've always bought in person from them at the shows. Larry C.

Glad I live close to Richardson Ranch and others in Oregon....They have tons of rough.....Thumbs up Sure...rub it in. The only native stone in my area is sandstone, shale and limestone. Unless I change my vacation plans, my rockhounding is limited to looking online or pilfering from people's landscaping.

Okay, the best quality eBay sellers I have used so far are: hypnoticgems, fantasiamining, tarbucky, gemcoreminerals, bambooro, volcanictreasures, doughboy265 and esciguy (for slabs). Everything I have bought from them has been good stuff, especially the first two. esciguy has awesome slabs.

Id say Cliff is Spot On! Is it really worth sitting in Jail Over? I retired From My Local Sheriffs Dept after 25 years and heard stories like this everyday. Id like to spend what time I have left beachcombing the shores of the Great Lakes and not getting 3 Hots and a Cot!
