@tela, no small pieces. This stuff is easy to cut with a saw, can the piece you have in any way be cut to make a pendant? Jim

Tela, years ago I decided to try my hand at carving stone. Alabaster. I carved a sleeping cat. Put it out in the garden. After years of being rained on, the kitty now has curly fur!!
That's one way to get texture!
Decided carving stone not for me. Stone bruised and I itched.

Yes, still have it. Put it in a more protected spot. I'm not sure I would have a talent for it myself.

@tela Pat, I am still not sure if I have a talent for it. I can make some half way descent pieces but still lacking in some areas. I started with some free limestone house decor brick that was very soft and just made abstracts. Rasp, chisel and screwdriver with some sandpaper after. Bought some soapstone and started some very simple shapes, high heeled shoe, a wave and pretty much whatever I could see in the stone. Went to the alabaster because the soapstone kept getting scratched by my fingernails and that is when I made the solar flare. Just by chance I received the orange about the time NASA posted an awesome photo of a huge solar flare and they fit. Just kept adding more difficult things until I got mediocre, bored and quit. Still tinker but not much
