Sorry to hear the hurricane is after you. Ms. Capt may have castration in mind should those shutters not go up in a jiff.

Usually land put a pretty good drag on a storm like this and cause it slow down and to break up, but because this storm is so wide I wonder if it will keep feeding off the energy from the ocean on both sides.

The Expression "Sweating Like a Pig" Has Nothing to Do with Pigs. Pigs don't sweat much, so they wallow in the mud to cool off their bodies. ... When the "pigs" "sweat." As the metal cools, the air around it reaches the dew point, causing droplets to form on the metal's surface.Make yourself a mudhole, complete with beer cooler.....

captbobHave you ever had a hurricane hit with north wind ? Looking at Tampa Bay storm surge, has it ever happened ? Or heard predictions of effects ? Looking at possible storm surge west coast Looking at Tampa Bay and St. Pete. Never remember Tampa Bay getting a storm surge ?? East wall of eye does not need to hit mouth of Tampa Bay. As of now they have the east eye wall hitting Charlotte Bay. Naples, Ft Myers, Cape Coral, Sarasota. Before it is likely to slow down. Yikes. I think a small Charlie hit here.

Yesterday, looked like Miami was done for. Bob looks to be closer to target, as of now. Let's see if the bounce off Cuba has any affect. Bad no matter where you are, I reckon. ETA you're going to feel it too!

Yesterday, looked like Miami was done for. Bob looks to be closer to target, as of now. Let's see if the bounce off Cuba has any effect. Bad no matter where you are, I reckon. ETA you're going to feel it too! Me ? Lots of rain and tropical storm winds at worst. I remember a small but potent Cat 4 Charley hit Charlotte Bay/Ft. Myers area in 2004. Moving fast it did not drop much rain and push too much surge. West coast strikes are bad because the strikes involve faster moving east eye wall. Bob needs to pay close attention to this one. He has open water in front of St. Pete due to the way it sticks out in the ocean. West coast strike from Charley did lots of damage : Costliest U.S. Atlantic hurricanes Cost refers to total estimated property damage Rank Hurricane Season Damage 1 Katrina 2005 $108 billion 2 Sandy 2012 $71.4 billion 3 Harvey 2017 $70 billion 4 Ike 2008 $29.5 billion 5 Andrew 1992 $26.5 billion 6 Wilma 2005 $21 billion 7 Ivan 2004 $18.8 billion 8 Irene 2011 $15.6 billion 9 Charley 2004 $15.1 billion 10 Rita 2005 $12 billion Source: National Hurricane

Charley was headed straight for Tampa, high probability, turns and hits 150 miles south into Ft Myers area at last minutes.

Marco Island presently a dead hit. Trying to figure how they claim elevation is zero feet above sea level. Just know it's low. Man made canals by digging wetland and piling it. about to be tested.

Most U.S. states shelter wild orchids. But Florida’s subtropical climate and the ease with which orchid seeds can be transported from the tropics by hurricanes makes this state especially rich in these unusual plants. Sheltered within Florida’s borders are 118 species, roughly half of all the orchids known to exist in the United States and Canada.

Man, that aerial view of Marco makes it look so vulnerable. Hope everyone got out of there.

Man, that aerial view of Marco makes it look so vulnerable. Hope everyone got out of there. Marco was epitome of digging Everglade lowland and making 'highland'. Probably a bunch of wise developers found a rural county and manipulated the municipality to let them dig and build on wetlands. A lot of very clever carpetbaggers ascended on south Florida and manipulated the whole area into fine beachfront properties. It happens all over coastal Florida from Amelia Island at Georgia border all the way south to Miami and back around and up western coast. Throwing caution into the wind. A miracle a dozen storms have not hit. They have beat the odds for many years. Now they have high rises on every point. Built for 140 MPH, hmmm, me would have built for 180 MPH. Granted, piling construction is a rigid footing for tall buildings in pure sand.

That footage of the wind hitting the islands is terrifying. No way would I feel comfortable in one of those high rises. Not that I think it would fall, but the experience is one I could do without.

jamesp - Got a submarine rented to get to the eye safely? I would like to be in a clear bulletproof bubble and experience the storm at maximum conditions. Submarine for the eye, only way. However, Ivan came up the Gulf and altered the ocean bottom. There is a sunken barge 6 miles out off of Mexico Beach Florida. It stood 9 feet off the bottom. Easily visible step in the ocean floor using a depth finder. Famous fishing hole. After Ivan went across it it stood only 4 feet off the ocean bottom. Somehow 5 feet of sand got displaced against it at 60 feet deep. 90 foot waves have deep reaching currents. I think 40 foot seas were the maximum wave height over that barge during Ivan. Nonetheless, it manipulated the bottom. I have been in 20 foot seas. It is a long way down and up. Inviting serious sea sickness. Cycling zero gravity stomach, hard to keep the cookies down.
