I did a BIN on eBay yesterday for something and the shipping calculator came up with $20.88 for shipping. Figured the item price + shipping was good by me, so I purchased the item. $100 item.
Did the Paypal thing and sent payment of $120.88.
okay, fine and dandy. Done deal and I'll wait for my item.
Tonight I received a message from the seller, saying:
I just wanted to let you know that the shipping total came to $39.12 so the total for the item came to $139.12. I have attached the entire shipping receipt for your records. Thank you for your purchase.
Seller included 2 photos of the shipping receipt.
Does the seller think I'm going to send them another payment for an additional $18.24? That's not what I agreed to with the Buy it Now + shipping price.
Anytime I have sold something and shipping was over my stated cost, I just ate the difference. If shipping was less than my stated cost, I have refunded the overage.
This is an odd one for me.
opinions?

I would tell him that I have already paid his asking price for the item and the shipping price, and that he accepted it. That's BS.
eta- I have eaten shipping cost before, too. It's the right thing to do if you make the mistake. Sucks, but it ain't their problem, it's yours.

How can this person do business like this Short answer, they can't. Email them back and tell them what you told us and rip into them just a little to stay in practice. May have to explain approval ratings to them... grin. Shipping a large vehicle lately. Car transport companies all suck. Talked to bunches. Have several family members in the auto business. Seemingly corrupt, opportunists. Had an agreement and a pickup date for them to pick up. Got my deposit and never picked up but did pit about a dozen of their cronies in the business on my email as spam. gaaaaardd !!!. Pay them the few bucks and save a hassle, its nothing to you..

I agree with you. It clearly states on Ebay that you are entering in to a legally binding contract. The contract was the amount they listed for that price and shipping and your acceptance of that price was the other half of the contract, which constitutes and offer and an acceptance. So you don't owe a thing.

I've run into similar situations but they followed through with it anyway, it's not worth negative feedback.

You dont owe them anything. They entered the wrong data into the shipping calculator, not your problem.

I agree with Scott, sounds like he is just making you aware that he lost his butt with shipping. At least I would hope that's the case

I too agree with @shotgunner that the seller was just letting you know. He probably either estimated the weight wrong or had to use a larger box and got hit with dimension charges. You would get a paypal invoice for the balance if that's what he wanted. I had it happen a time or 12, always ate the loss when it cost more, and always refunded the difference when it cost me less. Had stellar feedback and lots of repeat customers.

So, the widget arrived today. www.ebay.com/itm/Thumblers-Tumbler/122686472862?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649It is a(nother) 15 lb Thumlers Model B tumbler. The reason I bought it was that the listing said it is a high speed motor. From the listing: Notes: The motor turns at 3000 RPM, turning the barrel at 40 RPMOkay, cool. I wanted a couple more high speed units for rough shaping. Just the high speed motor alone is $58 from The Rock Shed + shipping. So figure 70 bucks to buy a new high speed motor. Well, this was the motor and a never used entire unit for $100 plus $20 shipping. Can't go wrong huh! EXCEPT ... it is the 1550 RPM low speed motor. On top of that, there was ZERO packing material in the box. Seriously. The loose barrel in the box beat some of the paint off the motor. Haven't plugged it in yet, should do so. The shipping box was trashed and taped together by Post Office people. *sigh* I need another low (normal) speed Thumblers Model B like I need my Mother in Law moving in. That means: not so much! I already have 9 of them plus the 2 blue high speed knock offs! Guess I have 10 now. (7 running at the moment) Sent the seller this eBay message: Hello, I received the Thumlers tumbler today. Delayed due to the hurricane I guess, but that's not a concern. I am a bit upset that this IS NOT a high speed motor as your description indicated: "Notes: The motor turns at 3000 RPM, turning the barrel at 40 RPM" This is a 1550 RPM motor - the low speed model. I already have 9 of these exact tumblers, and needed another one like I need more rain around here. I bought this one specifically because it was high speed = faster grinding & shaping of rough rocks in coarse grit. Sorry that the shipping was more than you expected, but I've gone from being thrilled at such a good deal to ... oh well, guess I'll throw this out in the garage and sell it someday. Also, FYI the paint on the motor got pretty beat up by the barrel being loose and hitting against it in shipping. You don't also have a high speed model and just shipped the wrong one do you? Thanks anyway for the good deal on what I did receive. Reckon I'll just sell it eventually. BobKinda doubt that I will hear back from the seller. Shouldn't be a problem selling it, but it's not worth the work to me to make 20 bucks or whatever. I know I can return it at the seller's shipping expense (per eBay - not as described) but that's not worth the hassle either. oughta neg 'em!

I wouldn't really neg. 'em. It's my decision to not return the item for not being as described. maybe a nice neutral

I had to return some expensive bone that was NOT as advertised. They had to pay the shipping. They sent me a label to print. I just stuck it on the box and away it went.
This seller is BS. They would totally get a neg and a much more unpleasant email. So, he had to eat the cost for shipping and decided NOT to spend the time or effort to package it right??? Talk about passive aggressive. Send the thing back just so he has to pay again. Now you have damaged goods no thanks to him.

harumph ...
Hello Bob,
I am very sorry about an miscommunication. I just published what was online and should have paid more attention to the fine details such as the speed. Unfortunately I don't have any others. And I am very sorry that it got banged up in the shipping. I should have wrapped it a lot better. I hope you aren't too unhappy with the Tumbler. I wish you the best of luck with all of the storms and hope you have a good day.
Cindy
I should have wrapped it a lot better.
ya think? How about at all? It was shipped in the original Thumler's box as if set up to run - with the barrel just sitting on the roller shafts and NO packing or padding at all. The barrel had all kinds of empty space to bounce/move around.
Looking at the Rock Shed website, the parts are worth more than the cost, so I will be keeping it. Just wish it had been a high speed motor as indicated. Will mull over appropriate feedback for awhile. Well chosen words can be scathing.

I think shipping costs have gone up recently. I shipped an eBay item today that would have normally gone out for $5 or $6 at the post office, but they charged me $10 this time. It was a small light weight box, 5x5x5 inches at 1 pound 9 ounces.

The seller 100% completely failed to address the misrepresenting of the motor speed. But did admit that mistake was not possible. If this was my deal? A) I would offer return and full refund B) big discount I keep and great review for service C) I keep for parts at full price, they get ugly red review. They choose the result. I would never have made that mistake. I do not feel they made a mistake either. Seems to me a purposeful misrepresentation of the goods was perpetrated.
