Still roaming the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands this summer, looking for goodies. Here's one from this week...a Fairburn? It's pretty heavily worn...some of the banding is partial and doesn't go all the way around. The banding itself is raised from the underlying matrix...sticks out quite a bit. Not one I think I'll even try polishing or anything. Since my son likes to name our best finds, we're calling this one "Bacon", given the thick "bacon" banding on one side. :-)

Cool find! I thought "bacon" too, therefor I would name it "Kevin".

Might be a fairburn eroded out of Teepee Canyon but probably a prairie agate. Got a bunch of prairies and looks a lot like some of them. More father/son teams have joined RTH lately..

We need to get Don, he is the Fairburn man. He will way in directly. Old bear is trying to slow down but the scent of a possible Fairburn will draw him in!!! LOL

LOL Yup, I smelled something about Fairburns. My guess is that you have a badly worn partial Fairburn. Those that have been badly fractured over time don't always have complete banding. I have several that look similar to yours. Don

Doesn't the texture of the stone say anything to you. A prairie is more coarse, softer if you will and a Fairburn is hard, more slick and more clearly defined banding. These bands seem to not be sharp enough but you live among them and have collected many over the years. Guess ole Don and his famed agate hound Jake are probably the sole reason the Fairburns are few and far between these days. Grin..

Cliff, without actually seeing this piece under a loupe, I can't say with certainty that this is a Fairburn. But having seen many that were badly beaten from tumbling in stream beds, my guess is still leaning towards Fairburn. The type which had a quartz crystal filled center. The crystals get broken apart, leaving a rough texture.
Of course, I could be wrong. It could be a prairie wanna be, trying to be a Fairburn.

You don't know how many times in the last two years that I have seen that good looking Jake justlooking so smart and good looking. He sure is an experienced rock hound and tolerates his dad typing for him. Gotta go with the master of Dakota stones till someone proves other wise. Great to see you post a bit Don !! Miss your wisdom and orneriness. !! Quartz filled huh? Maybe he'll cut it. Would never tumble or cut a for sure good Fairburn these days but would cut this one. Sure would like to be handling and looking at this one directly or better you looking at it. You're the pro on this stuff.

Go to the surgeon today to see how the back is Cliff. Hopefully it's still healing with no signs of infection. Ready to start packing and head toward Az for the winter!
